Are you maintaining your EHS and ISO programs, or just hoping for the best? Many plant managers and EHS professionals wonder why they should invest time and resources for EHS and ISO when they’re not facing upcoming inspections or audits. Why do some neglect their programs? • Many think they lack the resources to properly manage their EHS or ISO programs. • Without the immediate threat of an inspection, the importance of these programs are often underestimated. • At times, actions that don't seem urgent are delayed. There’s a hope to handle them later. • Some believe they are saving money now, thinking they can manage inspections when they arise. • Some even believe they can quickly prepare for an audit when notified. However, the benefits of maintaining consistent EHS and ISO programs are substantial: • Regulations mandate regular inspections, logs, and documentation. Maintaining your programs ensures you meet these compliance needs. • Regularly managing your EHS and ISO programs ensures a culture of safety and compliance, which improves overall facility operations. • Keeping your programs up-to-date avoids the resource drain when scrambling for inspections or audits. • A well-maintained program is scalable and repeatable, arguably the greatest benefit. Maintaining your EHS and ISO programs doesn’t just avoid violations and penalties – it builds an efficient and safe operation. Being inspection-ready at all times means less stress, no last-minute scrambles, and a strong culture of compliance and safety at your site. Are you inspection-ready? Keeping your written environmental, health, and safety (EHS) procedures and compliance plans current can be daunting, especially for smaller operations. However, a proven system to address document updates makes the process manageable. Consider implementing the following: ✔️ Set a periodic review schedule for your documents, like once every two years ✔️ Add document control information to identify who approves the document, the effective date, and the next scheduled review date. ✔️ Utilize a knowledge management system (KMS) to help track changes and control information. ✔️ Engage the on-site EHS committee or a consultant to assist with completing document reviews and updates. With some planning and standardization, your written documentation for EHS will always be ready for employee use and regulator inspection. #safetyprogram #environmentalprogram #EHS #regulatorycompliance #smallbusiness
