Yesterday a colleague made a statement that really rang true for me and I am sure a majority of the construction industry. The statement was simple and eye opening: "When I was in the field nobody said anything, they let me go crazy." My colleague made this statement in reference to double-checking the plans for field operations in the near future. I think what struck me so profoundly is the crystal clear truth of his statement and how this behavior affects the safety culture in the construction industry. While we have made strong advancements in construction safety over the years there is still much room for improvement. How many of us over the course of our careers have had someone in management say: "Here's the job, go get it done, whatever it takes." Let's all do better by double-checking the process, procedure, and sequence of events required to complete the work safely, while setting our employees up for success, rather than failure.

Site Safety is a conundrum. On the one hand, the city requires you to have a list of plans and supervision. The smallest discrepancies can create thousands of dollars in violations and time consuming Stop Work Orders. Developers implement NYC Department of Buildings requirements, hiring service providers to create plans or hire required site safety supervisors. Despite that, you’d be tough pressed to walk 5 city blocks in any direction, in any Burrough (barring Staten Island perhaps), without finding stop work orders. The reality is, most service providers are simply filling a requirement as opposed to adding additional value. Many will say, it doesn’t matter. The DOB will always give violations, so just plow forward. I disagree. If you’re spending money on Site Safety, why are you being hit with violations and SWO’s? If you’re already paying for Site Safety, you shouldn’t have to worry about additional unknown costs. Your team should be implementing systems that ensure compliance as a site progresses.
