When hiring a Health and Safety professional, I'd encourage hiring managers not to set a minimum amount of years experience that is required. "You must have 3+ years experience in a dedicated safety role" Why? Safety roles aren't equal. I've met candidates with 2 years' experience that have better experience than that of someone with 5 years' experience. It all depends on what they've been doing for those 2 years. Likewise, a lot of safety professionals have had careers before moving into dedicated safety roles. Many of these people have had safety as part of their role, for example in an operations type role. Instead, focus on the skills the candidate must have and their experience in performing the duties required for the role. I completely resonate of what is being said below. The challanges faced by Safety officer is very different. Most of the time he is in front line, carefully navigate through Senior leadership, line management and Govt authority, simultaneously He must be vocal on unsafe act / conditions and on system adherence. Safety is novel profession, An safety officer doesn't know in lifetime that how many life's he saved (Actually in most of industries it is a thankless job) This Incident needs detail investigation, and cannot be justified mearly by keeping safety officer arrest. Investigate on system and process adherence which is also core responsible of line leadership and also transparent dialogues with SMC Managment on there focus on safety.

Safety is indeed a collective responsibility, and it’s crucial to ensure that everyone—from the top management to the front-line workers—is aligned and accountable. Blaming a single individual without a comprehensive investigation into the systemic factors at play doesn’t address the core issues and risks undermining the importance of a well-structured safety framework. As per my point of view, cost considerations are often overlooked in the aftermath of such incidents. The focus tends to shift to blaming front-line positions without addressing whether financial constraints played a role in inadequate safety measures. This focus on cost over safety can create gaps in safety systems and procedures, compromising the well-being of the workforce. Let’s advocate for a thorough and fair review process that considers all aspects of safety management, including the implementation and adherence to work procedures and safe systems of work. And let’s also push for a shift in mindset where safety is prioritized as a critical investment rather than a cost.
