The recent groundbreaking for Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.'s (TSMC) €10 billion plant in eastern Germany is a turning point in Europe’s pursuit of technological sovereignty, but it’s also another reminder of the need for a “silicon-to-systems” strategy. The August 20 ceremony was attended by European leaders including EC President Ursula von der Leyen, who announced a €5 billion funding package to support the construction and operation of the new fab. As Kate Koger and I write in the IPC Blog, this is the company’s first European site, a milestone on the path to Europe’s goal to produce 20 percent of the world’s #semiconductors by 2030. But while semiconductors are critical, focusing solely on them neglects other key areas of the electronics ecosystem, like #PCB production, #EMS, and #advancedpackaging. For TSMC and other companies to be successful with European operations, the region needs to adopt a "silicon to systems" perspective that covers the entire lifecycle of electronics manufacturing beyond just the chip. https://lnkd.in/e-xzsX9k #silicontosystems

🤔 It is worth noting that though semiconductor heavyweights including TSMC, SK Hynix and Samsung keep raising the amount of investments, Taiwan and Korea, as the two countries holding the highest market share in advanced nodes, are expected to fall in their market shares, according to Trendforce’s latest report. 💰On the other hand, in the US, where the government has been pushing incentives and subsidies more aggressively, its global capacity share in advanced manufacturing processes is expected to jump. 💡 Find out more on Trendforce’s insights: https://buff.ly/4ajAWer 🔗 #Samsung # SKHynix# Semiconductor #TSMC

TSMC’s US Plant Faces Delays in Adopting Advanced Chip Technology Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) CEO and Chairman C.C. Wei recently highlighted the significant challenges the company faces in establishing its new plant in Arizona. Unlike TSMC’s facilities in Taiwan, the U.S. plant is unlikely to adopt the most advanced chip technology in the near term due to complex compliance issues, local construction regulations, and various permitting requirements. At a National Taiwan University event, Wei noted that building the Arizona factory has taken at least twice as long as similar projects in Taiwan. “Every step requires a permit, and after the permit is approved, it takes at least twice as long as in Taiwan,” Wei explained. These challenges underscore the difficulties the U.S. faces in its efforts to rebuild domestic chip manufacturing capabilities. Despite these hurdles, TSMC remains committed to its expansion plans, though the timeline for deploying the latest technology in the U.S. may be extended. #Semiconductors #TSMC

Big CHIPS news in my home state! Department of Commerce and Samsung — the only leading-edge semiconductor company that is a leader in both advanced memory and advanced logic technologies — have reached a PMT to provide up to $6.4 billion to strengthen the resilience of the U.S. semiconductor supply chain and advance U.S. technology leadership. The proposed investment would turn Samsung’s existing presence in Texas into a comprehensive ecosystem for the development and production of leading-edge chips in the United States, including two new leading-edge logic fabs, an advanced packaging facility, and an R&D fab in Taylor, as well as an expansion to their existing Austin facility. To put this in context, only THREE places in the world currently have the engineering and R&D capabilities to develop leading-edge logic manufacturing technologies. Samsung's R&D fab in Taylor will be the fourth. Excited to see the Biden-Harris Admin investing in Texas, creating jobs, spurring economic growth, and building strong semiconductor ecosystems. https://lnkd.in/exbNNZMn

The Department of Commerce today announced a preliminary agreement to allocate up to $6.6 billion from the CHIPS and Science Act to TSMC Arizona Corp., a subsidiary of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, for the construction of a third semiconductor manufacturing facility in the United States by the end of this decade. This investment, part of a broader effort to bolster domestic semiconductor production, is anticipated to create approximately 6,000 direct manufacturing jobs, over 20,000 construction jobs, and tens of thousands of indirect jobs, significantly enhancing U.S. semiconductor capabilities with advanced 2nm and potentially more refined technologies. President Biden and Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo highlighted this move as a critical step toward securing the U.S.'s leadership in global innovation and technology, underscoring the importance of semiconductors in everything from consumer electronics to national security. TSMC Arizona's expansion, marking the largest foreign direct investment in U.S. history, aligns with the CHIPS and Science Act's goal to reassert America's position in advanced manufacturing and secure supply chains. #tsmc #semiconductors #chipsandscienceact #manufacturing #jobs #technology #innovation #usa #arizona #investment Source- https://lnkd.in/gas-j87x

The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) has released a joint report with the Boston Consulting Group forecasting a significant increase in the U.S.A.’s chip manufacturing capacity, which is impressively expected to see a 203% increase—triple its current capacity—by 2032. This growth can be credited to growing industry investments thanks to the $50 billion CHIPS Act, which was signed into law by President Biden two years ago. As a result, by 2032, the U.S. is expected to see a rise in its share of global semiconductor production from 10% to 14%.
