Sortin’ is important! 🗑️ That’s because contamination ruins compost! Be thoughtful when throwing out waste and sorting so your local compost and recycling facilities have an easier time. For compost, remove stickers, tags, and rubber bands from produce. Keep plastic bags out of compost and recycling bins!

Plastic is rapidly making its way into our oceans and waterways at alarming rates. But there’s a pivotal moment when it either becomes garbage—and a danger to marine life—or is collected and made into something brand new. Let's Stop Trash Before the Store. The Packaging Waste and Cost Reduction Act could really impact the amount of garbage Minnesotans throw away. By starting the production process with the end goal in mind, we will have packaging that is designed to stay out of the landfill. The Packaging Waste and Cost Reduction Act incentivizes Producers to reduce packaging and to use reusable, easily recyclable or compostable packaging. Ever wondered what the numbers on the bottom of plastic items mean and where they should go? Here’s a helpful little guide to figuring out what goes in your curbside bins, what needs to go to a specialty recycler, and what can’t be recycled at all. ♻️ Numbers 1 and 2 are generally accepted in most municipal facilities, numbers 3 and 6 are often not recyclable, and numbers 4, 5, and 7 are dependent on each facility's abilities and requirements. When in doubt, always check with your local recyclers!

At the moment there are seven different ways of collecting rubbish and recycling across the county. Having one way would be more efficient and better value for money. We’ve looked at different options for collecting recycling and believe that providing two wheelie bins, one for glass, cans and plastics, and one for paper and card will help achieve our goals. 🌱 Rhode Island Needs a Bottle Bill! Our neighborhoods are drowning in beverage container litter, storm drains are clogged, our waterways are polluted...and our landfill is projected to reach capacity by 2040. ♻️ Curbside recycling just isn't cutting it, and tons of recyclable materials end up in landfills each year. The solution? Recycling refund systems, or "bottle bills", are proven to work. Ten states, including nearby Massachusetts and Connecticut, are leading the way. Studies show these initiatives can slash beverage container litter by 70-84%—and total litter by 34-47%. 😮 Rhode Island, it's time to join the movement! There is a 10-year plan in motion aimed at phasing out plastic bottle products on U.S. public lands, including all national parks.  This is a continuation of a movement that started in 2011, when the parks service encouraged the 417 federal parks to end plastic bottle sales. As a result, 23 national parks, including the Grand Canyon and Zion National Park, ended bottled water sales. In their place, the parks installed free bottle-filling stations.  As a result, nearly 2 million plastic bottles were removed annually from national parks and, subsequently, our oceans.  However, in 2017, the International Bottled Water Association successfully lobbied the federal government to reverse this plastic bottle ban, spending $80,000 over a few months to do so.  Then, in 2022, the U.S. Interior Department announced it would eliminate the sale of single-use plastics on public lands, which span nearly 480 million acres across the United States. This 10-year plan phases out plastics and helps keep our parks, rivers, lakes, streams, and oceans plastic-free! 💙
