This is an interesting development: sport is a high profile industry, and whilst the water based sports lobby might not have the financial clout of football or F1 it has rowing and yachting on board which is about as Establishment as you can get (cricket & polo aside perhaps). So far there’s little evidence to show the Govt are willing to act on water quality improvement and water provider management, so if that isn’t going to change could there be a focus on what forms an ‘acceptable level’ of pollution/exposure for those going into or onto the water? ⛳ Where are the biggest hotspots for CO2 emissions at an average #golf club? This is a question only a few courses have asked themselves until now. CO2 reporting is associated with laborious data collection and presents the average golf facility with new challenges.  👍 Five golf courses in Germany have taken up the challenge in a pilot project together with the Bavarian Golf Association and myclimate. The result is positive: nobody has to be perfect. But anyone who takes on CO2 reporting learns a lot about their management. 👏 These are the first steps towards a better future.  #sports #sportsbusiness

Swinging Against the Tide: The Urgent Fight to Save Scotland's Golfing Greens from the Sea 🏌️♂️   Imagine some of Scotland's most historic golf courses vanishing into the sea. This isn't a distant possibility—it's happening now. ⛳️🌊   In a startling revelation by BBC Scotland, Montrose Golf Club, one of the world's oldest golf courses, lost six meters to coastal erosion in just one year. With over a hundred golf courses at risk, Scotland's coastal heritage and the sport's very birthplace are at a critical juncture.    As climate change accelerates, iconic greens like Montrose Golf Club face an existential threat, with significant land loss to the sea each year. Scotland's golfing heritage, dating back centuries, stands on precarious ground, literally eroding under the impact of rising sea levels and fierce storms.    The battle to save these ancient links is a poignant reminder of the broader impact of climate change on our cherished traditions and communities. Viewing our efforts within the broader European context is insightful. It highlights the substantial work still needed for water ecosystem sustainability, as exemplified by the situation of the Oder River and the extensive use of combined sewer systems. Nevertheless, significant progress is underway. Research is being conducted on an experimental program to restore the Oder using hydrogen peroxide, alongside initiatives to prevent the discharge of saline mine waters by constructing new or expanding existing desalination plants and water storage facilities. Simultaneously, we are supporting projects within the river’s watershed. This work is part of a legal and financial strategy to separate rainwater and wastewater management and to retain precipitation at its source. Consequently, our team in the Polish Ministry of Climate and Environment (Ministerstwo Klimatu i Środowiska) is exploring ways to strengthen blue-green infrastructure in municipalities, which plays a crucial role also in mitigating droughts and flash floods. Welcome to the PWTAG newsletter, August 2024. PWTAG Annual Conference     This year's annual PWTAG conference – Future Proofing Pools – will be face-to-face again and takes place on Thursday 14 November at Loughborough's Holywell Park. It offers an exciting opportunity to consider how our leisure and sports pools are going to move on in the 21st century.  The importance of pools to the health of the population cannot be underestimated yet financial pressures could potentially lead to closures and a reduction in this important national asset. The challenges we face include reducing energy consumption to counteract global warming, improving water quality, reducing the reliance on chemical disinfection while keeping bathers safe from infection and updating or replacing ageing pools and associated equipment.  Speakers will consider how these challenges are to be addressed in the UK and elsewhere.  You will hear: how we might learn from technological changes in the drinking water industry;  improvements in pump efficiency; changes in monitoring pool water quality and bather loads;  reducing chemical disinfectant levels;  and how existing pools and plant have been revitalised for the future. Paris seems to be in a similar situation to much of England in terms of sewage and rainwater overspills, but the French authorities have been improving the way that wastewater is dealt with and cleaning the River Seine since the Olympics are coming up.
