We’ve already planted more than 6,000 trees in 2024! 🔄 eWaste Recycling & Laptop Donations Our commitment extends beyond planting trees. We’re actively engaged in eWaste recycling and repurposing electronics, ensuring they have a second life while reducing landfill waste. Today, Earth Day 2024, the League to Save Lake Tahoe stands proudly behind the groundbreaking single-use plastic water bottle ban in South Lake Tahoe and Truckee—a significant step in our ongoing mission to protect and preserve our beloved Lake. This transformative policy wasn't an overnight accomplishment; it is the fruit of a decade's worth of litter data collection, community engagement, and science-led initiatives.    The League's approach has always been data-driven. From 2014 to 2023, through countless cleanup events, our volunteers have gathered substantial evidence of the plastic problem in the Basin, collecting over 20,100 plastic bottles, 31,300 plastic caps, and 163,800 pieces of unidentifiable plastic debris. Armed with this compelling data, we have raised awareness and crafted a narrative that spurred action and policy change.     The League prepared for this transition by focusing on education and readiness. Our incredible Community Engagement team hit the streets, ensuring residents, visitors, and commercial vendors were prepared for the switch. Their hard work encouraged the adoption of sustainable alternatives and amplified the League's message that small changes in our daily habits can have a profound impact on our environment.     Let's raise a glass (of clear and delicious Tahoe tap water) and join us in celebrating this pivotal movement. 🩲♻️ In Australia alone, 1.5 billion nappies end up in landfill every year. What if we could turn that mountain of waste into something useful? Doing just that is DiaperRecycle (Kelland Environmental Technology Pty Ltd) with its easy-to-use subscription service. The company collects used nappies every fortnight, before disassembling them and transforming the fibre into a handy pet product – cat litter. Customers can then buy this recyclable cat litter back for discounted prices. “Composting should be free just like trash” If only that was how it worked. —————————— During #EarthDay and International Compost Awareness Week festivities, I got that chance to be out and about at various community events representing WasteNot, Inc. At these events, there are always a few people who want to start composting with our service, but aren’t able to commit the necessary funds in their budget at the moment. Inevitably, some of these people will plead with me that composting should be free for everyone. While I love the sentiment, I envy the communication specialists who have been able to convince a large portion of the population that collecting trash is free of charge. I end up being the bearer of bad news in these scenarios - telling passionate would-be-composters that trash actually is not free. Whether you know it or not, everyone is paying for trash (and the maintenance of defunct landfills) one way or another. I know that if people understood the true cost of trash and there were more incentives in place to decrease generation of trash in the first place, we’d create an economy in which composting is the cost effective waste disposal option. Anyway, here is a selfie I took last week when I took the day off to head to Springfield for Illinois Environmental Council Zero Waste Lobby Day. It was great to speak with legislators interested in making changes to the Illinois waste landscape. As always, it's a privilege to work at WasteNot, Inc. where we’re making strides everyday to lower that barrier for entry and to make sustainable waste disposal a seamless addition to any home or business.

In honor of #WomensHistoryMonth, we’re proud to spotlight Jessica Collard, a senior accountant on Greenbacker’s Corporate Accounting team and one of the newest members of GreenbackHER, an employee resource group that empowers women to succeed and creates space to support members in their careers, discuss the intersections of professional life and gender, and define and achieve their vision of success. Below, Jessica shares her thoughts on working with Greenbacker and how she incorporates sustainability in her day-to-day life. 1. What drew you to work at Greenbacker? From a young age, I’ve always felt passionate about the environment and protecting its natural resources. Knowing that Greenbacker shares those same values made joining the company an easy decision. 2. What are you most proud of in your work at Greenbacker? One of the things I’m most proud of about working here is that the firm encourages its employees to give back to the community and participate in sustainable causes outside of the office. I’m grateful to have participated in several volunteer events, including cleaning up trash along the coast of Maine before it enters the ocean, and assisting with trail maintenance in the Green Mountains of Vermont to protect against erosion and vegetation disturbances. In addition to enjoying the time I devoted to these causes, I also walked away with a greater understanding of the impact humans have on their environment and how we can better take care of our planet together. 3. What's a sustainability practice you enjoy using in your everyday life that you would recommend to others? I believe that sustainable living is largely driven by being intentional in our consumption. Single-use products have significant impacts on the health of our oceans and the ecosystems surrounding them, as well as the amount of waste entering landfills each day. Finding ways to replace the single-use items in my life has allowed me to reduce waste. I’ve found the simplest ways to do that include drinking from re-useable water bottles, remembering your reusable mug for the coffee shop, remembering your re-useable bags for the grocery store, and replacing dryer sheets with wool dryer balls.

Winning the Environmental Impact Award at our Social Care Conference, for their motivation to make green initiatives a daily activity and reduce their carbon footprint as much as possible.   🌍 They have moved from single use water bottles to larger 5L water bottles to reduce plastic waste while still providing free access to filtered water. 🌍 Their recycling bin is now larger than the regular waste bin, a clear demonstrating of their commitment to reducing their carbon footprint. 🌍 They regularly opt for public transport when organising group activities and plan trips to be as eco as possible. 🌍 They have a dedicated transport notice boards to ensure public transport information is available to everyone. 🌍 They only use eco-friendly cleaning products, never using bleach, buying refillable soap, concentrated floor cleaner and encourage everyone to handwash instead of using dishwasher. 🌍 They have weekly service user information sessions on mapping out where recycling centres in the local communities. 🌍 They have created a pollinator specific flower garden. Charcoal briquettes do not expire because it is mostly just carbonized. Animals don't eat it, not even termites. Neither does mold or bacteria.
