Flattery isn’t just some callow attempt to show devotion or avoid disharmony. It’s an age-old strategic tool for navigating complex social workplace dynamics. There is value in building positive relationships with key stakeholders. By offering compliments and expressing admiration, a person better positions themselves for future opportunities. It’s psychological currency. And, like any form of currency, the value fluctuates with supply and demand. Too much flattery leads to a loss of credibility and trust. Withholding it altogether can be detrimental, as it may signal indifference or lack of engagement.
