It's a fellowship wrap!
As September ended, so did my stay in Germany as part of the German Chancellor Fellowship, a program from Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.
TL;DR: I moved to Germany, a year ago, to pursue the quest of understanding, from an engineering perspective, how organizations in Europe handle Privacy and Data Protection. My focus was on #BDSG and #GDPR regulations.
Professionally, I had the chance to attend key events, deepen my current knowledge in Privacy and Data Protection and System Engineering, as well had the change to meet with several professionals references in the field.
Personally, despite the career growth opportunities, my aim was the experience of living and exploring a foreign culture. The hardships are real, and you learn tons about yourself. Be it the new language, culture, weather or habits. I will never forget when I had to call a German landline service, in German, to fix a problem with my ticket subscription (FYI: I did solve it 😂)
Project-wise: soon I will be able to share many of the insights I gained on how German and other European organizations handle privacy and data protection practices in software systems.
I am working on a publication (not end-goal, but an important step to validate my findings). Once published, the public repository (website) will be released. There you will able to access all the data, and findings (and also the hardships). My intent is sharing already tested: (1) Practices; (2) Tools; (3) Frameworks; and (4) Processes;
In a professional capacity, I am still based in Europe (Italy) and actively exploring opportunities that combine my experience in product management and development with my knowledge in privacy and data protection within software systems. I am seeking roles where I can be challenged, and where I can both apply my past experience and continue to learn, helping organizations overcome challenges related to privacy, data security, and data protection in software systems.
Many thanks to my to Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society and Dr. Jörg Pohle and Sarah Spitz for receiving me and allowing to have great coffee and amazing colleagues during my stay.
