This figure is alarming. This is the ratio of children leaving primary school who cannot swim at least 25 metres. All schools must provide swimming instruction either in KS1 or KS2. Children should be taught to swim competently, confidently, and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres, use a range of strokes effectively, and perform safe self-rescue. That’s not opinion, that’s the national curriculum! The number of pools across the UK is continuing to decrease and this is the main reason that fewer children move to secondary school with these life saving skills. This does not give every child a fair and equal start. Schools that do have pools, and share their facilities with local schools for free, are helping to slow an increase in that ratio. Washtenaw Camp Placement began tracking our campership numbers in 1962 when we officially launched our program. That year, we granted 114 camperships to residential camps. By 1964, the number had increased to 131 campers, and we were sending them to 20 different camps. However, by 1965, our referrals had surged to 365, with a significant number of children unable to attend camp due to financial constraints. Today, we continue to place an average of 150 campers every year, totaling over 10,000 camperships since 1962. Despite our success, one of our biggest challenges remains unchanged: the need to raise additional funds to send more children to camp. A campership holds immense importance for a child. Families of these children cannot afford the tuition, transportation, or camping gear required for summer camp attendance. Without WCP, many of these children would miss out on the transformative experience of sleepaway summer camp. The loss of this opportunity goes beyond what one might expect; it denies children the chance to engage in activities such as sailing, swimming, horseback riding, or making s'mores alongside their peers who are not on scholarship. At camp, they are given experiences that their families would not otherwise be able to provide, experiences that will shape their future. They will gain independence, confidence, and self-esteem—qualities that are crucial for their development. These kids need to go to camp. 🏊♂️ A Channel Swim for Educational Excellence: Supporting St. Olave's Grammar School 🏫 I'm excited to share a significant personal challenge. This summer, I will be undertaking my second swim across the English Channel, this time to raise funds for St. Olave's Grammar School. Last year, I was privileged to complete this demanding 21-mile swim with my team, raising £1,100 for Mencap. You can read my blog here - https://lnkd.in/eEZQca6v . The experience was transformative, teaching me the power of community support and personal determination. Now, I'm channeling that energy into contributing to the institution that has shaped my academic journey. St. Olave's is renowned for its academic excellence and robust programs. However, in the spirit of continuous improvement, we're always seeking to enhance our areas even more such as upgrading classrooms with cutting-edge technology, expanding our library's digital and physical resources & improving our sporting facilities, including state-of-the-art cricket nets These enhancements aim to provide our students with even more opportunities to excel, discover their passions, and prepare for future challenges. The Channel swim is a formidable challenge. The water is bone-chillingly cold, currents are unpredictable, and the sheer distance is daunting. However, I draw inspiration from the dedication I witness daily in our classrooms. If our students can show such perseverance and determination in their studies, I'm motivated to match that commitment in the water. This endeavor is not just about my swim; it's about our collective ability to foster an environment of excellence. Every stroke I take in the Channel will be powered by the support of our community. 🤠💚🐴GaitWay Inc: Empowering the Next Generation of Confident Women: 🐴SHARE: We are a non-profit organization in Hillsboro, Missouri, dedicated to helping young girls and teens to become confident and empowered young women through equine programs, mentorship, and employment training. Our mission is to develop and maintain equine facilitated learning programs that teach young women confidence, resiliency, leadership, and strength of character. Our girls develop essential life skills, confidence, employment skills, and emotional regulation skills through groundwork with our horses, horseback riding, working the ranch as Barn Aides, and through our comprehensive mentorship program. 💚CONNECT: Both the founder of GaitWay Inc, Jackie Greer, and the Executive Director, Heather Compton overcame their challenges as troubled teens and are now devoted to making the world a better place.
