Due to the rotor design, plain #bearings in centrifugal #pumps are exposed to dynamic forces. The interplay between the plain bearings and the mass forces can result in a dynamic operating state in which the rotor in the plain bearing moves on a circular path, the orbit. Particularly in water-lubricated systems, the low dynamic viscosity can lead to periodic mixed friction contacts, resulting in undesirable vibrations and noise. The effect of the plain bearing design on the operating state of the pump can be mapped using the multi-body simulation program Ansys Motion. The plain bearings are calculated using our Tribo-X solver, which also allows rough surfaces and mixed friction to be considered. On this basis, pumps and other plain bearing systems can be designed and evaluated in terms of load-bearing capacity and vibration behavior as early as the development phase. #mbse #engineering #mechanicalengineering #development #simulation #tribology

The TEHD #simulation of journal #bearings by means of #CFD and FEM involves a great deal of effort and is not suitable for daily use in the product development process. However, CFD simulations allow a complete calculation of the flow processes in the gap as well as in grooves, pockets or at bores. Not only mixing processes but also cavitation effects occurring at edges or in cavities can be calculated in detail. Shown is the pressure distribution in a white metal and bronze journal bearing running with mixed #lubrication. Due to the different alloys and manufacturing processes, the bearings have different material properties and surface conditions. The bearings have a lubrication groove which is supplied via a bore. A coupling of CFD and fast calculation methods based on the Reynolds differential equation is also possible. In this way, detailed statements on pockets, grooves or bores can be obtained with reduced calculation time. #engineeringservices #engineering #digitalengineering #tribology

In November 2023, I and my colleagues dealt with the design and optimization of the substructure of an impact-absorbing metamaterial using finite element analysis with ANSYS and the OptiSlang optimization toolbox. The goal is to create a metal-based substructure that is manufacturable with modern additive manufacturing technologies and performs well in effective energy dissipation during high-velocity impacts. Careful consideration is given to the selection of objective functions for optimization such that the obtained design does not only dissipate energy but also ensures desirable properties such as a low initial impact force. The resulting design undergoes rigorous benchmarking to validate its effectiveness. In a practical application extension, the study envisions integrating the optimized structure with car bumpers, offering a potential solution for enhancing impact behavior in car crashes. Through a balanced approach, using theoretical insights, optimization techniques, and practical considerations, this study provides a concise exploration of the potential and effectiveness of the designed and optimized impact-absorbing metamaterial substructure.

"The replacement of well-characterized thermoset matrix composites with thermoplastic composites is being driven by the increasing need for recyclability, as well as the potential for much faster cycle times and fastener-less assemblies via welding. Although there are indeed companies producing thermoplastic composite structures that have demonstrated years of successful use, these designs have been developed using internal methods and design rules. Currently, there are no standard methodologies or commercial calculation tools to design such materials to avoid fatigue failure." 👀 "In general, thermoplastic matrix materials exhibit more susceptibility to cyclic loading failure, manifested by phenomena including steeper SN curves (plots of cycles (N) vs. stress (S) to failure), time-dependent deformation and failure behavior due to viscoelastic mechanisms (creep and/or relaxation)), as well as lower endurance limits and higher levels of ductility in matrix behavior that can lead to plasticity-driven failure modes." 🕵🏻♀️ "Thus, the need for high-fidelity methods of predicting fatigue life for these materials is increasingly important as they are adopted for applications such as large aerospace and automotive structures and pressure vessels storing fuels such as hydrogen — structures that operate for long periods of time and require durability under cyclic loads.
