My name is Katie Hores, and I’m originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I graduated from City Charter High School in Downtown Pittsburgh and later earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communications with a minor in Marketing from The University of Pittsburgh Johnstown. Currently, I’m pursuing a Master of Arts in Public Relations and Advertising from Point Park University. I live in Washington, PA, with my best friend, Sarah, and her fiancé, Matt. We share our home with two cats, Socks and Mike, two dogs, Honey and Thumbtack, and my recently adopted cat, Lola. Lola is still settling in, but we’re hopeful she’ll soon be friends with our other furry roommates. I’m passionate about bridging the digital divide, particularly in rural areas like Greene County, where access to devices, the internet, and digital literacy is limited. The aging population in these communities often lacks the skills and support needed to navigate today’s digital world. As a Digital Navigator, I aim to be a vital resource in helping residents build their technological capabilities. By providing free devices and teaching essential digital skills, we can empower these communities to use the tools necessary for everyday tasks and enhance their quality of life. My experience with technology began in high school at City High, a technology-focused school where I earned Microsoft Office Master certifications. Throughout college, I took various media classes that honed my skills in social media, advertising, and software platforms. In today’s rapidly advancing digital landscape, it’s crucial for everyone to understand and utilize technology effectively. Digital skills are essential for daily tasks like scheduling appointments, job searching, and staying connected with loved ones. Providing training not only enhances individual capabilities but also gives underserved communities the confidence to become proficient in technology, improving their lives in meaningful ways.

Proud to help our colleagues at Digitunity at #NetInclusion2024 ... Digital Equity Coalitions and Capacity Building: Speakers, including Dave Sevick, Executive Director of Computer Reach, underscored the critical role of participating in local digital equity coalitions. Ashley Martinez, Manager of Digital Equity at Free Geek, shared, "Foster trust - rely on each other. Keep showing up at meetings. City-run wasn't working for us (Free Geek). We moved from city-run to locally led, which made a huge difference." Christine Carr-Barmasse, Executive Director at Mission Ignite, advised looking for resources and capacity-building grants within the community. Digitunity’s Program Officer for Technical Engagement, Nirvan West, moderated the panel. https://lnkd.in/gbmDerJW
