As part of our 25th birthday celebrations, we’ve sat down and recorded interviews with some of the journalists that we have worked with for over two decades.
In our first interview, Karl Flinders, Chief Reporter at ComputerWeekly.com shares how the tech media has evolved over the years, alongside anecdotes such as the best press trip he has been on.
He also gives insight into the Post Office IT scandal, a topic he has written over 450 stories about, and what lessons should be learnt from it.
I've been in IT journalism since 2000. I think working with PRs has changed a bit. There's just less meetings and there's a lot more done online. I have lots of meetings online. I have loads of Teams and Zoom meetings. And it's really good. You can do so much more. And then yeah, that's very helpful. And I just think that I think people just use online better these days and it really helps because it was always going to town, meet somebody in the coffee shop do an interview, go back home. And you'd just spend hours of traveling and not doing anything. The best press trip I've ever been on. The best one I've been on was to China. I have to say. That was with Huawei. That was about six years ago. So it wasn't really early on, but that that was sort of five days in China taking in Beijing. Shenzhen and Hong Kong saw that that was, yeah, that was, that was good. Well, the biggest story I've worked on is the post office scandal , which I'm still working on and which I've been working on for over 14 years. And it just gets bigger and bigger now. Obviously for the first 14 years of the story, it was really small, getting bigger, people taking notice. But then suddenly there was an ITV drama about it and it just went mad and the world wants to know about it now. So it's I'm busier than ever. I've written 450 odd stories about it. So I think some people might go to prison over it and hopefully everybody will get compensation. But it's still dragging on for many. But hopefully all the subpostmasters will get at least the financial redress that they are owed. Because remember, this is for money that was taken off them to start with. There are some really big lessons for the IT industry to learn about automating systems and the use of AI and also for IT journalists. The are stories everywhere. I mean, I'm not an IT expert. My background was political journalism, but there are really good stories out there. There will be other scandals. I think I've moved. I've changed jobs at the right times In my career, I mean, I moved into, I ended up at CRN because I left my previous job. Which was my second, then after CRN I moved to a competitor, Microscope. I was obviously dealing with you then and and then at the right time I moved to Computer Weekly. But Computer Weekly there's quite a lot there and it's really kept me engaged. And it's changed as well. We've changed over time. We're known for writing proper off diary exclusives. We investigate, we do proper stories. We like, we actively seek stories. Off diary, if you like, and also it's just it's got such a long history. It's the oldest magazine, computer magazine in the world.
Thanks Karl Flinders. I really enjoyed that and it was really nice to finally hear your voice. Of course, it was nothing like I expected!!! Congrats on an amazing career and 14 years of dedication to the Post Office Scandal
