Fewer than 15% of Lao and Hmong in the United States successfully graduate college based on Census 2020 and 2010 data. There are few scholarships or financial aid resources available for many, so for those of us who feel a college education can help these youth escape multigenerational cycles of poverty, scholarships like the Distinguished Ravens Scholarship are urgent and essential. So please amplify awareness of this to Laotian and Hmong households in your area in the next few days. The deadline is February 28th, 2024. Scholarships of $500-2,500 for descendants or legal wards of any Lao or Hmong individual who served in the Royal Laotian Military or Hmong forces in defense of the Kingdom of Laos between 1960 and 1975. Due February 29th. https://lnkd.in/epgkuctY

Interesting article written by my son, an assessment of European counter-terrorism initiatives in the Sahel region, page 18.
It was great fun to submit an essay on the issue of European counter-terrorism in the Sahel for the student-led journal 'The Diplomatic Post', alongside guest writer and 30 year experienced in diplomacy, Sir Sherard-Cowper Cowles. This year's theme was on the very vast issue of conflict. It allowed me to further develop the research I did for my Extended Project Qualification on France's military intervention in Mali (2013-2022), of which Tim Mercer supervised and helped inspire my research interests in the Sahel region. I look forward to seeing what topics the Diplomatic Post covers next year! https://lnkd.in/emXDPrsG https://lnkd.in/eg8mmNsW

Learnings from Mongols There is an oft-cited phrase "Looking back to look forward". As someone who loves reading history, especially the history of empires, it resonates completely. One of my favourite empires has been the Mongol empire, started by Genghis Khan and continued by Kublai Khan. Why? Because that empire was not only the largest empire in history, but also because it originated from a place which had nothing. Genghis khan was a tribal warlord from Mongolia, where the local warriors quarrelled with each other. The resources were scarce, and they had to do with little. They had to even drink dried horse blood to survive. Under such conditions, Genghis khan built his army and let them loose upon the world. They defeated the great Chinese empires, and the combined Cuman-Rus forces in Russia. The empire extended from modern day Mongolia to modern day Poland. How did they do it? Thats where the learning comes. Genghis Khan never stayed in palaces, or comfortable places. He lived in a tent, alongwith his soldiers. They incorporated technologies and warriors from the places they conquered. Thats how a bunch of nomadic horsemen started using artillery. Learnt it from the Chinese. They sacrificed heavy armour for increased mobility, and developed the "Parthian shot", a tactic where retreating Mongol forces would fire arrows by turning back. That would catch the enemy by surprise. Similarly, we should strive to be mobile in our lives, instead of settling and being comfortable. Another lesson is to keep innovating from what we have. We might not have everything we desire, but we often have everything we need, given we put our effort and innovation into it. -Dr Shivam Pandya Head and neck oncosurgeon Shalby Multi-speciality Hospitals.

When the Chinese decided to live in peace, they built the great Wall of China. They thought that no one could climb it because of its height... However, in the 100 years after its construction, the Chinese were invaded 3 times more. Enemy infantry soldiers never had the need to climb or penetrate the wall. Because they always bribed the guards and got in through the gates. The Chinese had built high and thick walls; But they couldn't build the characters of the wall guards. As a result, building human character is different and important... It precedes the construction of everything else. This is what the new generation needs today. As an orientalist said; “If you want to destroy the civilization of a nation, there are three ways; * Destroy the family structure. * Destroy the education system. * Belittle and demean their role models and references.” To destroy the family; Belittle and degrade motherhood. To destroy the education system; Do not give importance to educators and teachers and lower their reputation in society so that their students will despise and belittle them. Belittle the reputation of role models. Work insidiously to destroy scholars and scientists, so that they are suspected and no one listens to them or follows them... When the conscious mother is lost, dedicated teachers are lost and role models are discredited Who will teach HUMAN VALUES to young people... ?? Happy Peaceful Sunday to all!

Today is the International Day of Education, a day of celebration of the role of education in peace and development. This year's theme is "learning for lasting peace". Our partners, the LAID Foundation of South Sudan, are helping promote peace through education about conflict resolution and peaceful communication and empowering leaders to be agents of peace. Their peace projects teach these skills through workshops for local leaders to come together and learn about peacebuilding. Martha, the head girl at her school, participated in a school leader's workshop. After the workshop, she refused to say how many people she met from different tribes. "Before the war, we were in different tribes, but now we are not separated by tribes. So, no one was this tribe or this tribe (at the workshop). We are not going to do that (any more)." Let's continue promoting peace through education. Find out more or support this critical work here https://lnkd.in/gTTG6hit
