PSG/OL soccer match, Black Eyed Peas concert… Here is what we know about the augmented video surveillance system (VSA), deployed in Paris VSA, augmented video surveillance with algorithms, will be deployed this weekend in Paris during the PSG-OL soccer match and the Black Eyed Peas concert: two orders, which have just been published, specify the terms. If you plan to attend the Black Eyed Peas concert next weekend, or the match between #PSG and #OlympiqueLyonnais, your image could be processed by the brand new VSA device (for #algorithmic #videosurveillance). This controversial #technology was authorized for the first time last year in #France – a first in Europe – by the law of May 19, 2023 relating to the Olympic Games, despite the alarm of many civil rights and political associations. Two decrees, spotted by the digital rights defense association La Quadrature du Net and its automated tool Attrap’Surveillance this Wednesday April 17, have just been published. They authorized the use of VSA for these two events, a week after the publication of a fairly critical Senate report on the subject. Concretely, the VSA is authorized for: - the Ligue 1 soccer match between Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique Lyonnais Groupe, which will take place at the Parc des Princes on Sunday April 21, the Black Eyed Peas concert at Paris La Défense Arena on Saturday April 20. For the soccer game: 118 #cameras will scan two Parisian metro stations For the soccer game, the Groupe SNCF and the RATPgroup are authorized to “implement the algorithmic processing called #Cityvision and developed by the company Wintics from April 19 to 22, 2024” on “the images from the 118 #cameras installed at the Paris stations Gare-de-Lyon and Pont-du-Garigliano”, according to the decree. The device does not allow #facialrecognition, but relies on the #detection of “abnormal events”. The prefectural authorization specifies that the VSA must detect four events: - crossing or the presence of a person in a prohibited or sensitive area - too high a density of people; - crowd movement; - the presence of abandoned objects The recordings will be kept for twelve months. 31 posters will be installed at the entrances and exits of the experimental areas in the two stations, in order to warn people filmed by #augmentedcameras. For the concert, two metro stations involved The VSA authorization for the Black Eyed Peas concert will apply from April 20 at 2 p.m. to April 21, 2024 at 6 a.m. This time, it is the images from the cameras of the Nanterre Préfecture stations (RER A line) and La Défense Grande Arche (RER A line + Metro line 1) which will be scrutinized by the same algorithmic processing (Cityvision), by the Autonomous Paris transport authority, details the decree of April 17. These will be the 2nd and 3rd tests of VSA on French soil: a first experiment has already taken place on March 3 and 5 around Bercy, for the Depeche Mode concerts: a point which was noted in the senatorial report of...

A question of sport: whose government is about to upset their voters by committing to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games, and how many millions will the owners of the event invest in order to help mitigate/transfer the financial and reputational risks attached? Research suggests that the games generate money for the owners and host region, and are a great occasion for athletes, spectators, volunteers, sponsors etc, but they also require a lot of money to be spent on them (and the estimated costs are always lower than the actual costs). What if there were multiple hosts spread across the entire commonwealth, with sports taking place 24hours a day across multiple time zones? I will be visiting Glasgow in a couple of months to explore the long-term legacy of the 2014 Games and keen to hear from anyone involved and interested in sharing their memories of the event, including promises made prior to its arrival.
