With this month being Black History Month. Now, more than ever, we should shine a light on the underrepresentation of Black talent in our workforces. That is why, this year, we partnered with Programme One. Programme One focuses on addressing the significant underrepresentation of Black talent within recruitment. And helps to push for positive change & remove barriers. Since we partnered, we have been working together to: 🔹 Access even wider talent pools 🔹 Provide a more inclusive environment 🔹Further understand bias in the workplace Our very own Sinan Osman, CeMAP has also stepped up to the plate as a Programme One mentor! So he can understand & take action on the significant underrepresentation of Black talent in recruitment. Creating a truly inclusive & diverse workplace is an ongoing journey, and everyone is at a different part of this journey. And that's why, during Black History Month, it’s so important that we all push for more awareness.

Just to elaborate a bit: Focus on Equity - Shift from equality to equity by providing tailored resources and opportunities that address specific needs and systemic barriers faced by Black people. Level Playing Field- Dismantle structural inequities in hiring, promotions, and pay. Implement targeted support, mentorship, and policy reviews to create fair opportunities. Leadership Opportunities Create pathways for Black leadership by ensuring diverse representation, offering inclusive leadership training, and establishing sponsorship programs. Inclusive Culture- Promote cultural competence and inclusive practices through regular training, open dialogue about race, and creating safe environments for Black voices. Accountability - Set measurable goals, track progress through data, and maintain transparency to ensure organizations are held accountable for DEI commitments. These points emphasize creating equitable environments and leadership pathways for Black people in organizations. This is not only a win- win for the organization but the society.

And the award for Best Black History Month goes to… Just kidding! But I’ve been reflecting on Black History Month and how businesses and workplaces can truly amplify Black voices and communities all year long. It often feels like everything gets crammed into one month, as if just “showing up” is enough. But what about the days that follow? I have a few thoughts, but let’s dive into just one… How many are willing to go beyond a standard panel discussion in October? The Black community has built incredible initiatives and spaces that bring people together, share culture, and create impact—and these deserve amplifying all year round. Take Room 187, for example—‘your accommodation for old school, hip hop, and slow jams,’ a game show that celebrates nostalgic R&B culture and community. Picture a night with Room 187 for your employee network. It’s an experience I’d co-sign in a heartbeat! There’s a sea of untapped opportunity here, far beyond a checkbox on the calendar. Employee ownership can be a driving force in building generational wealth, replacing longstanding racial inequity with tangible, material growth. Employee ownership preserves Black wealth by supporting Black-owned businesses, providing a sale that keeps the businesses open and enables Black employees to become owners. Jennifer Bryant leads the Black Employee Ownership Initiative (BEOI) for Project Equity. This initiative integrates across our programs to ensure that all of our services reach Black workers and Black business owners. These efforts include work to expand the available data about Black entrepreneurship and workforce density. We are forming critical partnerships with organizations that have deep roots in localities and communities with significant Black workforces. Today, on #BlackHistoryMonth, I want to take a moment to celebrate and acknowledge the remarkable contributions of Black procurement leaders in the public sector. Their expertise, resilience, and commitment to driving impactful change are crucial to the success of our organizations and communities. As someone who is fortunate to work in and alongside inclusive teams, I'm constantly inspired by how diverse perspectives and voices bring innovation and growth to procurement and public service. Representation matters, and it’s encouraging to see more inclusive environments where Black professionals are not only supported but are leading complex procurement initiatives that shape the future of our public sector. Let’s continue to champion diversity and equity in our workplaces, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to excel and make a difference. Ava DuVernay’s, (Emmy Award, BAFTA Film and TV Award winner, actress, screenwriter and producer), powerful words resonate deeply with us: “𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗲’𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮 𝗯𝗼𝘅 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸. From reviewing our policies to ensuring that our programs are designed with diverse voices in mind, we are dedicated to fostering an environment where everyone feels they belong. We understand that diversity enriches us, challenges us to think differently, and makes us stronger as a whole. This Black History Month, we honour the contributions of Black leaders, activists, and communities that have shaped our world, while also looking inward to ensure that we continue to uphold the values of respect, inclusion, and equality in all that we do. Tomorrow marks the beginning of Black History Month – a time to honor the rich history, contributions, and achievements of African American/Black communities in the United States, past and present.
