This month is Hunger Action Month (although, truth be told, every month is hunger action month as far as we’re concerned!) Check out this powerful video from the New Jersey Assembly Democratic Office. It’s especially relevant now, as our member pantries are seeing a 25% increase in the number of people turning to them for food support so far this year. Three key takeaways: 1. If you treat people with dignity, you build their trust and make a greater impact. That means offering a consistent variety of high quality, culturally relevant, fresh and healthy foods - along with just being kind and compassionate human beings (we see you, MEND pantry leaders!); 2. One of the biggest challenges for food security organizations is the infrastructure needed to do this work (we’re especially focused on how to make fresh food access a consistent part of the solution - which adds an extra layer to consider); and 3. No single person or organization will solve food and nutrition insecurity alone - it will take a cross sector, collaborative, community-led approach, and NJ is taking the lead on making this happen (proud to be working with the New Jersey Office of the Food Security Advocate, the Food & Health Equity Coalition of Essex County, and so many others in this work!)
