Today is #GivingTuesday, an annual day of giving that follows the consumer holidays of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. After snagging great deals on gifts or tech for yourself, take today to reflect on where you can financially give back this holiday season. I may be biased, but 412 Food Rescue is such a great option, since you're supporting hundreds of nonprofits with your dollars. As a food rescue, we partner with food retailers to pick up their surplus food (that's still fresh and safe to eat) and deliver it to local nonprofits serving the community – safe houses, schools, housing authorities, LGTBQIA+ programs, churches, etc. Taking off the burden of where someone's next meal is coming from means they can focus on other things like caregiving, job search, addiction recovery or their mental health. A cool byproduct is also that keeping this surplus food out of the landfill mitigates harmful greenhouse gases like methane from being released into the atmosphere. This week has been incredibly difficult in our house as we watch the destruction in California—a place my husband will forever call “home.” Many times over the past 4 days, we’ve felt helpless, being on the other side of the country. So, we wanted to help organizations on the ground invested in helping the community as much as possible. Below are three non-profits that we’ve donated to, and would encourage you to consider donating to as well: World Central Kitchen is on the ground feeding residents and first responders. A reputable non-profit which has served over 100 million meals last year alone to those in need after disasters. California fire donations: https://lnkd.in/eNsmZnWb Pasadena Humane is providing shelter for animals, sourcing foster homes, and taking in countless animals into their ICU to treat their injuries and burns: https://lnkd.in/eZxEuus7 The GoFundMe Foundation is giving cash grants to individuals, organizations, and small businesses after a verification process so you can help as many people as possible. As of Thursday, they have already paid out 50 cash grants to assist: https://lnkd.in/eK9FQKb2 If you are unable to financially support these or other organizations, you are not helpless. You can also support by following the social media pages of non-profits and interacting with their pages (likes, comments & shares) so it boosts them in the algorithm to show higher on people’s feeds. Awareness is very important right now for them to gain donations.

In Michigan, nearly 12% of people face food insecurity, and many of our community members face barriers to accessing nutritious food. Food insecurity has soared over the past few years, making it more important than ever to create a future where our food system is equitable, sustainable, and equipped to meet southeast Michigan’s needs. At our foundation, we support a number of nonprofit organizations, including Fair Food Network, Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan, Forgotten Harvest, Capuchin Soup Kitchen, and Make Food Not Waste, who are working to increase food access, destigmatized food insecurity, and provide education and resources so that people throughout our region can thrive. Food insecurity is a worldwide problem that manifests itself locally in all our communities. Over the past few years, Curcio Webb, LLC’s holiday donation has been made to Chef José Andrés World Central Kitchen program. The World Central Kitchen teams are first on the spot wherever hot meals and human kindness are needed. Karen McKeon volunteered for a ½ day volunteer shift Thursday, June 27th at Mercer Street Friends Food Bank. In 2021, Karen directed her Curcio Webb charitable donation to Mercer Street Friends. At the time she shared that “the Mercer Street Friends Food Bank channels 5.5 million pounds of food and groceries annually to a network of over 100 local food pantries, shelters, soup kitchens, meal sites, schools, senior and disabled programs, and low-income housing sites. Our food distribution and hunger prevention programs reach over 60,000 people who face the pain and indignity of hunger.” Five point five MILLION pounds annually—how impressive is that? The day Karen volunteered at the Food Bank they needed help labeling bags for “SHUP” (their Send HUnger Packing program). SHUP is a "meal bag program that helps feed food insecure students over the weekend when they lack access to school meals." It distributes 10,000 bags a month to students in need throughout Mercer County, New Jersey. Karen, your in-the-trenches work at the Food Bank is so important. Thank you! It’s not just students in Mercer County, New Jersey who run the risk of going hungry on the weekends. Curcio Webb is going to address local food insecurity for children at our upcoming annual company meeting. Brian Pieper and his wife Katie are spearheading an opportunity for us to pack bags of food for children to eat during the weekend. They’re tapping into a local program that helps kids get meals on weekends i.e., where they are already participating in a meals-at-school program. That’s why we’ve joined the Albertsons Companies Foundation in a groundbreaking coalition to tackle summer hunger through the USDA’s new Summer EBT program. Partnering with @FeedingAmerica, @FRACtweets, @GiftCardBank, @HungerFreeUSA, @mRelief_form, @nokidhungry, and @PHAnews we’re reaching over 200 foodbanks, 300 school districts, and 1,500 organizations.
