Good afternoon from Concept Solutions! Today, Morning Brew listed a fun fact about Independence Day: "Did you know that today is the real Independence Day? The Continental Congress formally declared freedom from Great Britain on July 2, 1776, but approved the Declaration of Independence two days later. John Adams was so sure that July 2 would be the date of the holiday that he wrote, 'I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival…It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade with shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations.' However, it’s difficult for historians to know how legit this was because John Adams was always trying to get shews added to everything." —Neal Freyman, Matty Merritt of Morning Brew

Happy Fourth of July everyone! Enjoy the day! Enjoy our Freedom! Celebrate our beginnings! Be blessed. Here are five interesting facts about the Fourth of July: 1. Declaration of Independence Date: It was not unanimous - Rhode Island did not originally sign... The only hold out became the 13th state to ratify the Constitution on May 29, 1790, almost 14 years later and more than a year after Washington was sworn in as president. 2. Population at Independence: When the U.S. declared independence, it had a population of only 2.5 million people 3. Fireworks Tradition: Philadelphia witnessed the first Fourth of July fireworks display in 1777, marking the beginning of a cherished tradition. 4. Salmon Tradition: In New England, eating salmon on the Fourth of July is a longstanding custom. 5. From the outset, Americans celebrated independence on July 4, the date shown on the much-publicized Declaration of Independence, rather than on July 2, the date the resolution of independence was approved in a closed session of Congress.

"Is there any good news to celebrate? | The Coffee Klatch with Robert Reich Robert Reich 587K subscribers Subscribed Share Download Feb 3, 2024 The Coffee Klatch with Robert Reich Today is the South Carolina primary, but rather than spend much time on it — Trump will get his party’s nomination — Heather and I consider the remarkably good set of economic reports that emerged this past week and what, if anything, they mean for Biden’s bid for re-election — and why more than 70 percent of Republicans say the economy is terrible. We also look at the U.S. military’s attacks on Iranian forces and the militias Iran is backing, in Iraq and Syria, in response to Iran’s drone attack last Sunday that killed three American soldiers and injured at least 40 others. Is this the start of a regional war? Along the way we look at the new Child Tax Credit bill, and why so many progressives are against it. And why the border security bill emerging from the Senate, as well as additional funding for Ukraine, are unlikely to pass (the answer is spelled TRUMP). Finally, we examine whether the Delaware chancery court is correct — that there is such a thing as excessive executive compensation — and why Elon Musk is living proof. Please grab a cup, pull up a chair, and join us. "

⭐ 5 Fascinating Facts About the 4th of July: History, Traditions, and Surprising Connections⭐ ⭐ A Different Date Could Have Been Independence Day⭐ The Continental Congress actually voted for independence on July 2, 1776. John Adams even wrote to his wife, Abigail, predicting that July 2nd would be celebrated as the great anniversary festival. However, July 4th became the date celebrated as Independence Day because it was when the Declaration of Independence was officially adopted. ⭐ The Liberty Bell Tradition⭐ Every 4th of July, the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia is tapped (not rung) 13 times in honor of the original 13 colonies. This tradition began in 1963 and is a poignant reminder of the nation’s birth. ⭐Thomas Jefferson and John Adams’ Remarkable Connection⭐ Both Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, the only signers of the Declaration of Independence who later became U.S. Presidents, died on July 4th, 1826—the 50th anniversary of the Declaration. This remarkable coincidence adds a poignant layer to their legacies. ⭐The 4th of July Wasn’t Always a Federal Holiday⭐ While Americans have celebrated the 4th of July since 1777, it wasn't until 1870 that Congress made it an official federal holiday. Even then, it was unpaid for federal employees until 1938, when Congress changed it to a paid holiday. ⭐The World's Largest 4th of July Fireworks Display⭐ The Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks in New York City is the largest Independence Day fireworks display in the U.S. Each year, over 75,000 shells are launched from barges on the East River, creating a spectacular show watched by millions in person and on television. These facts highlight the rich history and enduring traditions associated with America’s Independence Day. ⭐ #4thOfJuly #IndependenceDay #AmericanHistory #FunFacts #Patriotism

50 years from now, Michael Jordan will be seen as greater than LeBron James for the same reason that Led Zeppelin will be seen as greater than Metallica. Reasonable people can differ on this today, mostly because of longevity, counting stats, and the boat-rising tides of historical progress of sports and music (optimization of business model, approach to personal health, etc.) The graph here shows MJ vs. LeBron seasons stack-ranked by win shares, from highest to lowest. LeBron has clearly had the best late career of any NBA player. But, from the “who was better at generating wins” perspective, Jordan’s best 11 years were better than LeBron’s, and this feels significantly more important. Music is obviously more subjective, but there are certainly a couple Y axis metrics that show the same relationship if you sub album / ticket sales, number of bands influenced, all the lifestyle things you’d suspect if you read ‘Hammer of the Gods,’ etc. Beyond comparing the prime years, though, here’s the trump card: Led Zeppelin and Michael Jordan created, dominated, transcended and, ultimately, defined what it meant to be superstars of their category. No one ever asks who is the next generation’s Van Halen or Kobe or Pearl Jam or Tracy McGrady. I’m sure you got there already, but this isn’t really a post about sports or music.

My latest column for USA Today reflects on the meaning of Independence Day as we approach to our nation’s 250th birthday in 2026. If President John Adams had his way, we’d be celebrating on July 2nd – the day in 1776 that the Continental Congress in Philadelphia officially declared freedom from Great Britain. But the Declaration of Independence wasn’t signed for two more days, and it was Adams’ successor Thomas Jefferson who began the tradition of observing the Fourth of July at the White House in 1801. It wouldn’t be until 1870 that Independence Day was made an official federal holiday. Today is not just a day to celebrate our ideals and the people who envisioned them. It’s also a time to honor the generations who came after our Founders, to fulfill these promises and renew our nation. President Kennedy said on Independence Day 1962, “that Declaration unleashed not merely a revolution against the British, but a revolution in human affairs.” Here’s hoping that your July 4 includes rest, relaxation, and reflection–on our nation’s history, its promise, and the part we can all have in carrying forward the American experiment.
