Why are email alerts so…well, so rubbish? I have set email alerts with numerous different job sites, including this one. As someone who has worked in international sales, I usually set my key words as “export sales manager” and “international sales manager”. But, honestly, some of the jobs links I am sent are usually completely irrelevant. Granted, I do get some export or international sales jobs coming my way. But, mostly, I get links to jobs such as, sales managers, business development managers, regional sales managers, import / export executives, and so on. Now, whilst some of these roles may, actually, be of interest (I am also looking at UK sales positions), my point still remains that the filters on these sites are not working correctly. What appears to be happening is that individual words only are being picked up by the sites' algorithms, and not the entire phrase. (Inverted commas, by the way, make no difference at all.) So, that is an explanation, though not an excuse. But, what about the following? Logistics Coordinator Trade Compliance Specialist Tax Inspector And, what on earth is going on here? Kitchen Sales Designer Head Chef Tyre Fitter Veterinary Assistant Senior Lifeguard Tennis Coach (I kid you not!) And, as for my location (Birmingham), why do I get jobs for Scotland, or Poole, or the Isle of Man, to name but a few distant locations? Is it really beyond the wherewithal of recruiters to develop key word filters that actually work? 🙄

One thing that I have noticed in my 10 years of being a salesman, is that most if not all retail/sales/trade institutions do not offer the opportunity for their existing customers/clients and/or prospective ones to see how their product/service gets prepared to their specific needs. Many companies have introduced client tours, information sessions on what the company does, their culture and just a basic rundown of how they would be treated should they join with the said service provider. We have a very large foot traffic pool in the following places (Wernhil Park, Grove Mall & Maerua Mall) of which businesses could exploit (not really a word I would like to use), but this could be to your advantage. A basic set up of bench, our company mascot, a few banners, pamphlets and a small workstation of where employee/s could get outbound clients (field sales service agent/sales consultant). This is not limited to privately owned companies, can be introduced for SOE's and government offices as well. I would like to believe, that the everyday consumer would welcome this with open arms & a big smile.

In my first sales job, I had a phone and a list. It was the travel industry in the 1990’s Used a €1 jotter and 10c biro to take notes and followed these steps 1. Knew who my customer was 2. Understood where they’d travelled before 3. Started with rapport 4. Was really interested and curious about people and what they needed from a holiday 5. Spent a lot of time drilling into the details of what they liked 6. Learned about holidays that went badly in the past 7. Made sure I knew what budget we had to recommend the right resort 8. Confirmed who else was going to be on the holiday and what they’d like from it Sales is really simple. Stop over complicating human conversations and be caring and curious. You’ll be surprised how helpful you’ll be from that place 😎#happyselling
