How do I contact the emergency services?
Easy I hear you say, just call 999 (or 112). But what if you are unable to make a voice call? Did you know you can also contact them via text message in an emergency?
How do I use emergencySMS?
Before you can text in an emergency you have to register your phone. This is something you can do right NOW and is very simple.
- Text "register" to 999. You will get a text reply asking you to confirm you would like to register (which you reply yes to).
After this is done, you are registered and if you need to can be supported via text in an emergency.
What do I do in an emergency?
If you find yourself in a situation where you need the emergency services text 999 and include in your text:
Who you need support from (Police, Ambulance, Fire & Rescue or Coastguard)
What your problem is (keep this brief)
Where you are/where the problem is happening (Give the name of the road, house number, post code or nearby landmark is you can).
What happens next?
The emergency service will either ask for more information or will tell you that help is on the way.
Things to note
Don't assume your message has been received until you receive a text reply back.
It will usually take about two minutes before you get a reply. If you don't receive a reply within three minutes, text again or find other ways of getting help.
This service works throughout the UK on all mobile networks, it cannot be used from abroad.
