CTO network - I have a question for you.   Is a technical background essential for a CTO?   In a discussion last week with Alex Farr, group CTO at Christie Group, the change in requirements for the role was prominent.   Many moons ago when I hired my first CTO, technical expertise was the number one thing any hiring company wanted.   Now the picture is very different.   Some barely even mention candidates’ experience with tech.   My question for you - why is this?   And is a technical background even essential anymore?   #CTO #Tech

Let's embark on this whimsical journey and explore the seemingly straightforward task of finding your tech guru. Step 1: Summoning the CTO Ah, the age-old ritual of summoning a CTO. Just sprinkle some coding jargon, draw a pentagram with USB cables, and voilà! Your very own CTO appears in a cloud of debugging smoke. Easy, right? Well, not quite. Turns out, they prefer Slack messages over pentagrams. Step 2: Identifying the CTO Spotting a wild CTO in the tech jungle is like finding a needle in a stack overflow. They're elusive creatures, camouflaging themselves with hoodies and laptop stickers. But fear not! Just look for the telltale signs: a faint glow of screen light emanating from their cave (aka home office) and the sound of furious keyboard tapping. Step 3: Luring the CTO Now that you've identified your target, it's time to lure them out of their coding sanctuary. Offerings of artisanal coffee and the promise of unlimited snacks usually do the trick. But beware: once you've lured them in, they might start discussing algorithms and scalability. Don't panic, just nod and smile. Step 4: Sealing the Deal Congratulations! You've successfully captured a CTO. Now, all that's left to do is seal the deal. Offer them equity, a fancy job title, and the freedom to build their tech empire. But remember, they're a rare breed, so be prepared to negotiate... and possibly sacrifice a few hours of sleep. In conclusion, hiring a #CTO may seem like a walk in the park, but beneath the surface lies a labyrinth of technical acumen and strategic thinking. A good overview of what is going on with the tech job market. "Big Tech is slashing hundreds of thousands of jobs and blaming artificial intelligence, but there may be more to the story than that. Intel just announced fifteen thousand layoffs yesterday, causing their stock price to plunge. Big Tech, who for over a decade provided all sorts of employee perks may no longer be the dream place to work." I am biased towards this video because it reaffirms some things that I've been saving for years: - Tech jobs at smaller companies or non-tech organizations are more stable and less intense than Big Tech - Don't get into tech unless you are actually interested in the field. Its a volatile field that requires continuous self-education and the ability to pivot. - AI isn't as much of a threat to tech workers as the average CEO

Microsoft's hiring of Sam Altman and Greg Brockman feels a bit icky. As the biggest investor in OpenAI (they own 49%), it looks like a pretty brutal conflict of interest. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella was being a bit cute about it in his tweet. First setting out that he remains committed to their partnership with OpenAI and looking forward to getting to know the new CEO. But then right in the next sentence happily announcing they'll hire Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, 'together with colleagues'. Strategically it's clever - better get the all star team working for you than somewhere else. But it must leave an extremely bitter taste in OpenAIs mouth, if your biggest investor/supporter is essentially trying to put you out of business like that. Not just hiring Sam and Greg, but also raiding your team. It should make any tech company think twice about taking money from a strategic investor.
