3 months in at Confluent. One of the main focuses at any new company is building pipeline
Moving into a new business/industry with new personas/challenges/tech etc presents a number of challenges
Having worked in the sales space, which provides most of the "silver bullet content," I was surprised at how much didn't work. Same for all my older content as well - sorry.
Moving into a new company or thinking about it? Here are 3 things that have translated well when builidng pipeline, 3 things that haven't, 1 thing that surprised me and then 1 more thing that worked
Pre-outbound research
Articulating point of views/hypotheses
Getting on the phone
Things that have not translated at all, perhaps industry specific who knows…
Emails - which sucks as this was probably my POD once upon a time. From what you read on LinkedIn, seems like a challenge for most
The whole 10/20/30 second thing, and I have always found this. I like saying "how is your day going?" and then asking them if I can tell them why I rang. It worked before, its working better now and I like it
Point of views/hypothesis being too specific. Generally, VPs of Sales = 1 - 3 people who all care about the same thing(ish). This industry may have 20+ in similar roles and 2 of them may have been assigned a project that relates to Confluent at a time.
In this case, being broad first then info grabbing or drilling down into specifics have worked. Being specific too early led to a lot of quick conversations - "Sorry, I dont work on the stock management. I work in the fraud part - thanks for calling"
One thing thats surprised me with how much it has worked.
LinkedIn.
I have never sent so many voice notes, messages or connected with so many people on LinkedIn so I'm leaning into that.
Which reminds me of one more that has translated well.
Value.
Alot of my personas have listed skills or shoutouts, taking a minute to read skills they have and finding an article related takes a 1 minute to do but returns a fair amount
