The Jefferson Council for UVa Empower Change this #GivingTuesday November 28, 2023 Dear Friends of the Jefferson Council, Give to The Jefferson Council. We’re not haughty. We are deeply humble and appreciative of our civilizational inheritance bequeathed by past generations. We’re not in it for the money or the perks. We don’t go on junkets or attend expensive conferences. You’ll never find us in Davos. TJC relies overwhelmingly upon the contributions of volunteers giving generously of their time and effort. We deliver bang for the buck. But we don’t bully Americans into submitting to radical, untested ideas on how to re-engineer society. We love living in a free country, and we’re inclined to live & let live. All of us want to pursue a living, raise a family, attend our house of worship, and leave our community a little better than we found it. But while we were minding our own business, militants took over America’s elite higher-ed institutions, including the University of Virginia. Today UVa is dedicated to being “great and good,” which sounds nice until you realize that “good” is defined by social justice warriors intent upon refashioning the university–and society–more to their liking. “Good” means endlessly raising tuition…to pay soaring salaries…for an ever-growing cadre of administrators…whose goal in life is undermining the traditions of moral and intellectual excellence that once made UVa the greatest public university in America. We protect Mr. Jefferson’s legacy. You read our blog: https://lnkd.in/eq2xKCAT and email missives from our President Tom Neale & myself. In order for us to continue fighting the good fight, please add TJC to your list of year-end gifts. By donating to TJC, your gift will support what really matters: upholding the Jeffersonian legacies of honor, excellence, free speech and intellectual diversity. After highly successful fundraising during an initial burst of enthusiasm in 2022, our total donations are down in 2023. We take responsibility–we were focused more on executing our mission than issuing fundraising asks. We depend upon recurring annual donations to survive. Thank you for your prior support. We hope you will contribute again before year end so we can continue our battle to return Mr. Jefferson’s University to the traditions we all hold dear. Donate~please mail a check: The Jefferson Council c/o Wilgis, Darrell & Associates, Inc. P.O. Box 401 Riderwood, Maryland 21139 With profound gratitude for your support, I am, yours truly, James A. Bacon, Executive Director, The Jefferson Council jabacon@thejeffersoncouncil.com Thank you for being a champion of Jefferson’s legacy, Honor, the Lawn, and an intellectually diverse University. Donations are fully tax-deductible as a charitable contribution. TJC is a 501(c)3 corporation organized under the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia. 🚀 As we announce a new wave of funding, across research projects in the healthspan space, our CEO Dr Mehmood Khan reflects on Hevolution’s purpose of catalysing the shift from lifespan to healthspan and the mountain we’re committed to climbing as the world's largest philanthropic funder of geroscience: 💡 “We’re spending a decade of life in poor health— this is a decade too many. Our current healthcare system focuses more on intervention, but our goal is to address the underlying causes of aging and age-related diseases. Geroscience and healthspan science are critically underfunded, which is why Hevolution is stepping up to bridge this gap.” ➡️ Learn more about the institutes we’re funding here https://lnkd.in/gNvjtwnY

Systems change innovator and advocate. Co-creating practical ways to make non-profit funding equitable and locally led.
A very clear article with great links that assembles arguments and evidence for why unrestricted funding is the best way to fund. And in the rare cases when it’s not, that funders must then provide full cost recovery. Please share it with funders and their boards. This is funders talking to other funders and they need to listen to each other. #ShiftThePower #FairFunding #transformation
From more than two decades of research in this area, it’s clear that the evidence in favour of unrestricted or restricted funding must factor in circumstances and for whom. But it does make it clear that the status quo – of restricted funding as the dominant model – rests on very shaky foundations. Ben Cairns, Institute For Voluntary Action Research, bangs the drum for unrestricted funding in our latest Opinion piece. On the fence with restricted vs unrestricted funding? Let us know why! https://bit.ly/3UJ6Tbx

Would you be my elevation sponsor and support multiple sclerosis research? Dear friends and supporters, I am a passionate Cykelnerven rider, and in June, I will face an exciting challenge: I will bike the most demanding Tour mountains – not just for myself, but for a world without multiple sclerosis. It is an honor to be a part of this event and to do everything I can to raise funds for vital multiple sclerosis research. 11,000+ meters of elevation await me. These mountains are more than just climbs; they are symbols of hope and courage. And this is where you come in. As my elevation sponsor, you have the opportunity to support multiple sclerosis research. You can sponsor me with any amount you wish – every penny counts! Imagine I bike all 11,000 meters of elevation. If you support me with, for example, 5 øre per meter, it results in a donation of 550 kroner from you to multiple sclerosis research. Here’s how you can become my personal elevation sponsor: 1. Write in the comment section below how much you would like to support per meter of elevation. 2. Once I have completed the four cycling days, I will contact you and let you know how many meters of elevation I have cycled. 3. Then you can make the payment directly to my personal fundraising page. 4. You can also already support with any amount on my fundraising profile here. https://lnkd.in/dR4mYtip You make a vital difference. For all those who have multiple sclerosis close to their hearts, your support is a beacon of light in the dark. Together, we are a part of the fight for a world without multiple sclerosis. In advance, thank you very, very much for your support and encouragement. Let’s create change together!

Changing Places Awareness Day plays a crucial role in making more people think about accessibility in everyday life. For those with complex disabilities, every journey they make requires a huge amount of planning, whether that is checking where the nearest Changing Places is or seeing what type of wheelchair access a venue has. That's why it is great to see the likes of TransPennine Express committing to upgrading existing infrastructure to ensure their networks are more accessible. Not only does it make for a safer and more comfortable environment, it also creates more opportunities for people to have the confidence to get out and about. Each of these small changes to our transport networks can make a massive difference to moving towards a more inclusive society.
#ICYMI A brand new Changing Places toilet was opened at Stalybridge Station by Changing Places Campaigner, Zack Kerr, as part of Changing Places Awareness Day. Installed by Innova, the launch saw members from Changing Places UK, TransPennine Express and Cllr Christine Beardmore attend the opening of this new facility, which will make rail travel more accessible for commuters and the local area. The new accessible toilet was funded by the Department for Transport with Muscular Dystrophy UK and TransPennine Express’s Customer and Communities Improvement Fund. What gets measured, gets done... My mum always teased that I counted everything (I even measured the height of my stacked textbooks after studies, not even mentioning the number of used pens, writing pads or hours in front of said books... vs target of course). Little did I know this habit would stick (#JamesClear and many others in the same discipline speak to my soul). Believing in hard work above all; consistency, marginal gains and tracking, I'm exceptionally proud being part of the #AutoProtectGroup #UKChallenge 2024 team. Help our team support #ActionForChildren doing amazing work to protect and support children and young people (765,905 to be exact last year; as we're counting). At 174.4km running and 780km cycling clocked to date (not that we're counting); almost sufficiently prepared for this amazing initiative in just two weeks' time. Stick with habits that stick.

How researchers are using AI to save rainforest species in Puerto Rico Rainforest Connection (RFCx) and Google.org have harnessed artificial intelligence (AI) technology to monitor and protect endangered species in Puerto Rico's threatened rainforests. The organizations utilized an open-source AI platform called Arbimom to analyze over 7.7 million sound recordings from more than 900 sites, improving knowledge of at-risk species' locations. The AI-driven project, funded by Google.org, deploys "guardians" on tree canopies to capture sounds, connecting to satellite and mobile networks for real-time broadcasting. This innovative approach allows conservationists to study and safeguard species efficiently and could be replicated globally. Rainforests face severe threats from deforestation, climate change, and development. #RainforestConnection #Googleorg #AI #RainforestConservation #PuertoRico #EndangeredSpecies #AIApplications #ConservationTechnology #Biodiversity #EnvironmentalProtection #AIInnovation #TechForGood #WildlifeProtection #RainforestMonitoring #AIResearch #TechNews #EnvironmentalNews
