During #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek it's significant, now more than ever, to remember that mental health first aid is just as important as physical first aid, and that people should speak out when they need support. That's why, at Connect Health, we’ve invested in training over 20 colleagues to become Mental Health First Aiders (MHFA) through MHFA England. Our network of MHFAs compliment the range of other tools we have in place through our 'Boost' healthy workplace programme, which supports the mental health and wellbeing of our wonderful colleagues. Mental Health First Aiders are trained volunteers who act as a first point of contact for anyone who is experiencing a mental health issue or emotional distress, of a work-related or personal nature. These interactions can range from having an initial conversation, to supporting and signposting individuals to get appropriate support. Becky Robson, Chief People Officer, shares: "Mental Health First Aiders in the workplace serve as compassionate guides, fostering a supportive environment where individuals feel heard and valued. Our investment in our network of MHFAs is an essential step towards a healthier, more resilient workforce as we drive forward our People Centred approach." Starting from February 12, 2024, the updated First Aid at Work guidelines focus on prioritising mental health within the workplace. The term "catastrophic bleeding" has been traded up for "life-threatening bleeding," offering a more practical approach for employers facing this risk. They've also streamlined guidance for first aid training providers, making the whole process a smoother ride. What's your take on these updates? Share your thoughts below, and let's spark a conversation about the evolving landscape of workplace safety👷♂️ #HSEUpdate #FirstAidGuidance #WorkplaceSafety #MentalHealthMatters

https://lnkd.in/gDcZsrVF Having staff with MHFA training is a practical way of building psychological safety in the workplace - check out Sem's story below.
With one in five Australians experiencing a mental health condition each year, I decided to become an accredited Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) instructor a few years ago, to contribute positively towards building healthier communities and workplaces. As a trained mental health nurse with over two decades of experience, I embraced MHFA training for its focus on workplace psychological safety. This training equips individuals to recognise signs of mental distress in colleagues, provide initial assistance, and guide them to appropriate professional help. It promotes a supportive environment, reduces stigma, and enhances overall well-being, contributing to a healthier, more resilient workforce. Feedback from workshops I have led often highlights that "everyone needs this training; if we all practised these skills, our workplaces would be much nicer places to go to." Let’s create a psychologically safe environment for our staff and give them the tools to look after themselves and each other. Email us at admin@signifuture.com.au if you wish to train your staff in Mental Health First Aid. #WouldYouKnowWhatToSay #IAmAMentalHealthFirstAider #IAmAnMHFAInstructor Semakaleng Hinton Michelle Eason
