Find out more about the City & Regional Deals model from our infrastructure funding experts in our recently released report: Building Tomorrow 🏢
A useful contribution by Urban Development Institute of New Zealand UDINZ member Simpson Grierson on the City and Regional Deals discourse. It identifies the key features that need to be built into a City and Regional Deal model. We’ve seen first-hand how these can work in Australia, and of particular interest to UDINZ members will be how they can bed-in the transformative infrastructure needed to unlock urban growth, and remove the uncertainty linked to our political cycles. Thanks to Mike Wakefield, Edward Norman, Josh Cairns & Catherine Shipton for their work on this and releasing guidance in advance of the official announcements on the much discussed location of the city deals.

The government of Ontario is helping to accelerate the delivery of approximately 14,200 homes along City of Toronto’s Eastern waterfront. The province is investing $325 million to help build a vibrant, mixed-use community with public spaces, parks and housing. The revitalization will attract over one million visitors annually and add $13B to the economy. This funding builds on the $470 million previously invested to protect the Port Lands from flooding and support the development of new communities. The Queensland team spent a proactive morning at the Property Council of Australia’s ‘How are Councils responding to the housing crisis?’ event, featuring keynote speaker Julie Saunders from Urbis and panellists Mayor Peter Flannery City of Moreton Bay, Mayor Jon Raven of Logan City Council and Teresa Harding, Mayor of Ipswich City Council. Our key takeaway from the event were: • In the coming years, there will be a contraction between housing demand and supply; demand will steadily decrease to meet supply levels. • A long-term investment into social and affordable housing is crucial to foster healthy communities. • We need to build social and affordable housing for the future as well as the present; a lesson learned noting the current social and affordable housing figure has been current for 10 to 15 years prior. • Growth LGAs have residential approvals but not enough supportive infrastructure. • The infill infrastructure incentive has been cited as a “sugar hit” to temporarily relieve the pressure for housing supply delivery. Thanks to the organisers for pulling together the session! Saurav Naidu & Nicholas Condoleon #ratio #fosteringchange #transport #brisbane #southeastqueensland #planning

We need a change in Tauranga’s culture, so we can move from an unsustainable developer-led growth model, to a sustainable city plan that puts the needs of local people ahead of the desires of vested interests.
