Day 3/5 of my #qigonginnature challenge. Please watch and read to the end. It was an interesting experience both as a Qigong practice and as a video recording. I chose to share the full clip, because it makes the point that not everything is as glossy as is presented to us on various channels, and yet for many people the standard that someone edited to ‘perfection’ becomes THE standard. Nothing less will do! I am in the last acts of my qigong teacher training course with the brilliant Long White Cloud Qigong. I was introduced to the practice last year by Arron Collins-Thomas, and fell immediately for both its form and thinking. ‘Qi’ refers to our energy. Which you can think of practically (blood flow, heat, nerves, magnetism etc.) – – and spiritually (the intangible sense that sits beyond). While ‘gong’ means skill or work. The practice therefore – in its simplest terms – is the act of ‘working’ – and gaining ‘skill’ – with our ‘energy.’ I find this premise both compelling, and hopeful. Previously I used to consider my energy – and with it my mood – preordained. A lottery, where some days I had a spring in my step, and others a lethargy. Through the practice – and philosophy – of qigong, I am learning that our energy is malleable. That we can sculpt, and shape, and move it. That we are the artists of our experience. It is a lifetime of work, – and I am an infant in the journey – but I feel deeply inspired to walk this particular road, and to help a few others along the way. There are many sources of ‘Qi’ in our lives; sleep, food, drink, exercise, relationships, time in nature, work, rest, and play, to name just a few. When there is a healthy ‘flow’ – and balance – to all of these sources, we will tend to find our energy is in excellent order. But should one of these channels get ‘stuck’ - we not tending to an important relationship – – or not getting enough sleep – – or failing to rest sufficiently – then ‘dis’-‘ease’ will develop. In Chinese Medicine, it is stagnation which sits at the root of all illness. Therefore, through practicing qigong we are able to find flow in our bodies, an act which can encourage and ensure that we then find flow in other areas of our life.
