Biomedical science is an exciting and dynamic field that focuses on how cells, organs, and systems function within the human body. This area is highly relevant to understanding and treating human diseases. Oxford University is a globally respected center for biomedical research, where students in this program will benefit from the expertise of leading experts across diverse clinical and non-clinical departments. The Biomedical Sciences course at Oxford provides students with an intellectually stimulating education in modern molecular, cellular, and systems biology, as well as neuroscience. However, it is important to note that this program does not provide medical training. Students initially acquire an integrated understanding of biomedical science, which allows them to shape their subsequent studies towards topics of greatest interest. Practical laboratory work is an integral part of the program, and students must complete these elements satisfactorily to progress. As the course advances, increasing emphasis is placed on scientific research, as students gain first-hand experience of laboratory work in the later stages. Students have the opportunity to choose their own research projects, with a wide range of possible areas of investigation within the University. After three years, students can choose to graduate with a BA degree, with specializations in either Neuroscience or Cell and Systems Biology, based on their second-year module selections and third-year options. The research-intensive fourth year leads to a Master's degree for those who complete it. We offer Master of Science (Course), Master of Science (Thesis) and Doctor of Philosophy programs, with either an 'in Biomedical Engineering' or an 'in Biomedical Sciences' designation. Application deadlines for all programs are as follows: Canadian Applicants August 1 for September admission December 1 for January admission April 1 for for May admission (thesis-based only) U.S. and International Applicants April 1 for September admission August 1 for January admission December 1 for May admission (thesis-based only) Application information and eligibility requirements are found on the Department website. Applicants are also encouraged to read the Application Requirements for Academic Documents information. The Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies requires payment of a $135 CAD application fee. This fee cannot be waived. Information about tuition and fees is found here. For tuition-related questions, please contact the Student Service Centre. Please direct immigration and study permit questions to University of Alberta International. Before applying to thesis-based graduate studies (Ph.D. and M.Sc.) in BME, a prospective student must have a faculty member from the Department of BME or an Adjunct Professor from BME to act as their primary supervisor; see the BME website for a listing of faculty members. Prospective students that are applying to the course-based Master's program do not need a supervisor before applying. The status of a submitted application can be checked in the Graduate Studies Management Solution (GSMS) applicant portal. Login to the portal is with the same email address and password used to create the application. DO NOT use Bear Tracks to check the status of an application.
