Healthcare organizations can do everything in their power to fight substance abuse, homelessness, and mental illness... but without the support of legislators and policy, making meaningful change is quite challenging. I'm grateful to see policies like this one making their way to Congress. Every single person, regardless of their background or situation, deserves equitable access to healthcare and support. A new bipartisan bill would connect people in crisis with check-in and outreach services to provide continuity of care. Research shows that follow-ups can dramatically reduce the likelihood of a repeat suicide attempt. Congressmen Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.) and David Trone (D-Md.) re-introduced the Continuity in Necessary Evaluative Crisis Treatment (CONNECT) Act to provide people who reach out to the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline with potentially life-saving follow-up services. https://lnkd.in/ecgrh-_5 #mentalhealth #behavioralhealth #addictiontreatment #policy #politics #publicpolicy

*** We are WORTH SAVING. STOP CRIMINALIZING MENTAL HEALTH AND SUBSTANCE USE. **** There’s a sweeping movement happening across the country right now. Harm reduction and public health is under attack. The “new” solution”? The archaic, failed, iron law of prohibition. Funding from the Opioid Settlement Funds, in several states, in being withheld from groups who work directly with our most vulnerable populations, providing public health services & proactively providing evidence based practices. Instead, these long awaited funds slated for overdose prevention, treatment, recovery & harm reduction are being reallocated for police enforcement in a multitude of ways. As part of the Department of Health and Social Care's work to reform the Mental Health Act, we were asked to examine the advocacy needs of voluntary patients. This week, we released the findings in our report: ‘The advocacy needs of voluntary patients in mental health hospitals’. The headlines include: - Voluntary patients have low awareness of their rights and are sometimes unaware of their legal status. - Voluntary patients need advocacy support for a similar range of issues as detained patients. - Safeguarding concerns can apply equally to voluntary patients. - Expanding advocacy to voluntary patients can contribute to system-wide initiatives and improvements. - When someone’s legal status changes from detained to voluntary, access to advocacy can "suddenly fall away”. - Voluntary patients should have a legal right to advocacy, and this should be on an opt-out basis. The report also contains case studies demonstrating where access to advocacy has assisted voluntary patients and contributed to a more patient-centred mental healthcare system. How do we decrease these social emergencies? By addressing various drivers of crisis. Crisis tend to lead to even more complex crises. Early intervention can prevent worsening outcomes. Enhanced care management, violence prevention, care coordination, and continuity of care all lead to better crisis prevention thus better health outcomes for the whole community.

Our upcoming webinar features perspectives from five current and former VA psychologists who advocated for Veterans’ mental health and VA psychologists at different levels within and outside of the Veterans Health Administration. Panelists will share strategies on how to advocate effectively, specifically with respect to considerations as a Federal employee. This webinar will also offer an opportunity to learn about resources to support participants in their advocacy efforts. At the end of this course, participants will be able to: -Describe at least two advocacy issues relevant to VA psychologists and Veterans mental health discussed by the panelists. -Explain three or more important advocacy considerations for Federal employees. -Identify at least two resources to remain informed of advocacy issues relevant to VA psychologists and Veterans healthcare. https://lnkd.in/gegni_Fx
