The European Union's environmental laws give us hope for a more sustainable future. With the progressive abandonment of fossil energy sources, we can look forward with optimism towards a cleaner and greener world. 💚 #EuropeDay #sustainability #EU #environment
Today is #EuropeDay 🇪🇺 Did you know since when the EU has environmental policy? 📜 In 1950, the Schuman Declaration established the foundation of our union, and environment and climate also became increasingly important. 📜 In 1972 the European Council declared the need for a Community on environmental policy. 📜 In 1987 The Single European Act introduced a new ‘Environment Title’ - the first legal basis for a common environmental policy. 📜 In 1993 the Treaty of Maastricht made the environment an official EU policy area. A lot has changed since 1950, but one thing stays the same: we need to protect the environment and take #ClimateAction With the #EUGreenDeal, we are turning the EU into a modern, resource-efficient, sustainable and competitive economy - #ForOurPlanet and for people. Earth Day 2024 in Latin America Today, as we celebrate Earth Day, it seems entirely fitting that the third meeting of the Conference of the Parties for the Escazú Agreement is kicking off in Santiago, Chile. This international treaty from and for Latin America is officially known as the “Regional Agreement on Access to Information, Public Participation and Justice in Environmental Matters in Latin America and the Caribbean.” It is a first-of-its-kind treaty to enshrine the rights of public access to environmental information, protection for environmentalists, and access to justice for these matters. Meetings will be held from today through April 24th with countries presenting their roadmaps to national implementation. We will cover results from the meeting in a future newsletter. #earthday #environment #environmentalprotection #pachamama #climatechange #latinamerica #environmentallaw #internationallaw #melonlatam

Today, on Europe Day, I'm reminded of the profound principles that shape the European Union and its enduring relevance, particularly in light of the current geo political situation, but also in the realm of sustainability. As we navigate global challenges, EU principles such as solidarity, cooperation, and environmental stewardship remain beacons of hope and progress. Let's reaffirm our commitment to these values and work together towards a greener, more sustainable future for all. #EuropeDay #Sustainability #EUValues #ESG #impactthatmatters

🌍 A policy that was derailed last year has finally been brought into law thanks to a fresh vote by EU countries. In March, Hungary unexpectedly withdrew their support, however, Austria's Environment Minister, Leonore Gewessler, has now added her backing - which tips the balance back in nature's favour. 🔒 The #NatureRestorationLaw law aims to help Europe restore at least 20% of land and sea areas by 2030, and all ecosystems in need of restoration by 2050. 🎯 It lays-out specific, legally binding targets and obligations for nature restoration in each of the listed ecosystems, including terrestrial, marine, freshwater and urban ecosystems. "There is no time for a break in protecting our environment." - Alain Maron, Minister for Climate Transition, Environment, Energy and Participatory Democracy, Brussels https://lnkd.in/eXRqEmS5

The news that the Nature Restoration Law is in peril is so depressing: it is a vital step forward that is needed for nature and therefore life. If anyone has any way of influencing the states that have abstained or voted against the NRL, please pull out all the stops and help to unblock this incredibly important legislative opportunity. #naturerestoration #environmentallw #NRL
Nature and democracy are in peril today: the Nature Restoration Law has been held hostage by last-minute political game-playing. EU citizens want a law to #RestoreNature, and their representatives delivered. The law has already been approved in European Parliament, and today's planned vote was a mere formality. However, despite widespread support from citizens, European Parliament, scientists, businesses, and 19 Member States, its future is now in doubt thanks to Hungary's politically motivated manoeuvring in Council of the European Union. Abstaining countries (AU, FI, BE) must rise and vote in favour to prevent the EU failing in its own stated commitment to biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation and environmental sustainability. Without nature, there's no future for any of us. Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2024, please remember that, step up for millions of people and break this undemocratic and unnecessary deadlock to #RestoreNature. The time to act is now!
