We can do better for kids and community safety. We must do better. In NSW, kids as young as 10 can be arrested. The earlier children come into contact with the system the more likely it is that they have ongoing contact with the system. This interaction is traumatic and fails to create safer communities. Evidence shows that our current approach harms children and negatively impacts families and communities. Even worse, what we are doing now is ineffective for both our children and community safety. Every child deserves to flourish and thrive. Today’s Supreme Court ruling in the case of Grants Pass, Oregon v. Johnson is a devastating decision, especially at a time when providers like Father Bill’s & MainSpring are operating shelters at stretched capacities every night and seeing sharp increases in the unsheltered population. Under the ruling, localities will be able to arrest, ticket, and fine people for sleeping outdoors on public property. Our critical work continues to address the root cause of this issue – a severe lack of affordable housing. Now, the fight for housing isn’t just about providing stability for our most vulnerable neighbors – now it’s a fight to ensure that our poorest neighbors are not jailed or punished simply for being unhoused. FBMS will continue to advocate for more housing resources and for a day when no one has to sleep outside. Read more at https://lnkd.in/ekyfZWtj

Public assistance programs are a lifeline for low-income New Yorkers, including children, seniors, and individuals with disabilities. Yet for most New York households that rely on public assistance, housing instability is unavoidable. Safe and habitable rental units in the private rental market simply do not exist at price points that are affordable for households relying on public assistance’s allowance for rent. January is National #PovertyawarenessMonth. In recognition, we encourage you to read our report on the inadequacy of public assistance shelter allowance and rental supplements: https://lnkd.in/giS5hUCG

A new report by cross-party think tank Demos and supported by Grosvenor Hart Homes is published today, highlighting the economic and social impact of failing to join up public services for vulnerable children, young people, and families. Too often the people who most need support in areas such as housing, health, and employment are let down due to the siloed nature of public service delivery, with the knock-on cost of this reaching up to £4.3 billion of public money spent on additional services trying to manage issues rather than prevent them. We are very proud to support this report, being launched in the House of Commons today, with the ambition to bring attention to the issues and stimulate policy innovation that can begin to shift focus from firefighting to prevention.
