When enhancing your outdoor space, it's important to know the difference between a landscape architect and a landscape designer. Landscape architects handle larger, complex projects and require a state license, while landscape designers focus on residential projects and offer valuable expertise. Avoid mistakes by understanding their expertise, checking credentials, and communicating clearly! #LandscapeDesign #HomeImprovement #OutdoorLiving #LandscapeArchitect #GardenDesign

Have you ever walked through a city and been captivated by its charm? It's not just the grand landmarks that make a difference - it's the small design elements that often go unnoticed. Let's take a moment to appreciate their importance: 1️⃣ Sense of Identity: signage, benches, and curbing contribute to the identity of a neighborhood or city. They create a distinct sense of place and help us connect with our surroundings. 2️⃣ Human Scale: Pocket parks, tree-lined streets, and outdoor seating areas create inviting and human-scale environments. They make urban spaces more comfortable and encourage people to socialize and enjoy their surroundings. 3️⃣ Safety and Accessibility: Well-placed lighting, clear signage, and thoughtfully designed crosswalks improve safety and accessibility. These small design elements ensure that pedestrians feel safe and can navigate the city easily. 4️⃣ Sustainability: Small design elements can contribute to a greener urban landscape. Incorporating rain gardens, green roofs, or bike lanes promotes environmental sustainability and encourages alternative modes of transportation. 5️⃣ Cultural Expression: Public art installations, statues, and historical markers celebrate a community's heritage. They foster a deeper connection between people and their urban environment. As landscape architects and urban designers, let's not underestimate the power of small design elements. By paying attention to these often overlooked details, we can create urban spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional, inclusive, and meaningful to the people who inhabit them. Let's continue to advocate for their importance and incorporate them into our urban designs. #landscapearchitecture #kimleyhorn

Controversial thought: Architects are often asked by clients if they follow VASTU when they design buildings. But being a Landscape architect, I ask: If we care so much about VASTU inside buildings, why do we forget about it outside? There are specific TREES recommended by VASTU to bring success, yet we often overlook them because we don’t want to leave any open spaces in our plot. Shouldn't we fully commit to VASTU beliefs, even if it means sacrificing some indoor space to make room for Trees?

The American Society of Landscape Architects will be holding their national conference in Washington DC on October 6-9. Ahead of that event, I've been reflecting on the profession and the impact on our world. Last May, I had the honor of doing a TEDx talk in Chicago with decorated design professionals including Maria Pinto, Paola Aguirre Serrano, AICP, Sally Augustin and Doug Farr, FAIA, LEED AP, CNU-A. My presentation centered on How Landscape Architects are Changing the World. If you have twelve minutes, please watch this recently launched YouTube video and hopefully get inspired. https://lnkd.in/gpiB7yHV 😎
