A couple photos from my walk around the Norm Asbjornson College of Engineering building on the Montana State University campus. Landscape architecture by Land Design Inc out of Billings, MT. Really loved the space created by the movable wooden picnic benches. @landdesignmt @msu_nacoe * * * #ConnerLandscapeArchitects #MontanaLandscapeDesign #MontanaLandscapeArchitecture #MontanaStateUniversity

What can vernacular construction teach us about post-carbon building? At Studio Bark we engaged with the National Society of Master Thatchers to better understand this time-honoured building technique. The outcome was a design that is at once grounded in place and tradition while responding to the imperative of the present. The building is primarily grass-based construction, with straw cassettes proposed for the main fabric elements and thatch for the roofs, allowing it to sequester significant amounts of carbon, which has been captured over short growing cycles. A nice aspect of this project was habitat integration, with the north elevation serving as a nesting wall for birds. The ‘chimney’ elements are bat roost boxes. #vernacular #straw #thatch #carbon
PLANNING PERMISSION for a modern thatched home in rural Dorset under #Paragraph84 The radically low-carbon thatched home will use no concrete in its construction, with over 70% of materials sourced within a 50-mile radius. The design references traditional local architecture, incorporating radically environmental technologies and ensuring the stewardship of the surrounding natural habitats.

NEW RESEARCH - a fascinating report by the Sydney Pollinator Lab investigating a pollinator corridor for inner Sydney, Australia. This research was funded by an Alastair Swayn Foundation DESIGN STRATEGY Grant. Pollinators may reflect overall ecosystem health, and may also represent the canary in the coal mine of urban ecosystems. The unseen work they perform in wild places is shrouded even further by the built environment. This research seeks to make this work visible, celebrate it, and to facilitate its proliferation. Last week Senior Architect E. Apostol was at NLA's PechaKucha event on 'Innovations in Infrastructure' in London - presenting on Thames Tideway, and specifically one of our five sites on the eastern end of the project: the King Edward Memorial Park Foreshore. The starting point for our design is the arrangement of massive below-ground structures necessary to meet the project technical requirements. But the site is also at the sensitive river edge of a hugely important green space in East London: a vital amenity for multiple communities. The design incorporates a sequence of riverside terraces descending towards the water, alongside a new public square and areas of planting to encourage new habitats and increase biodiversity. The soft landscaping design defines a journey from parkland to river, with increasingly wetland planting, creating multiple habitats that expand on the biodiversity objectives of the park and its role as a local educational resource. The presentation was part of an evening of showcases of London's exemplar schemes that model place-based approaches to infrastructure provision in the capital. The showcase included diverse typologies and scales of delivery to peel back and dissect the infrastructural layers of London. Reflecting on a Whirlwind year in Conservation Architecture https://lnkd.in/e-xybXKZ
🏛️ Reflecting on a Whirlwind Year in Conservation Architecture As we wrap up another extraordinary year at BluePrint Architectural Workshop, I wanted to share some thoughts with our community. The past year has kept us incredibly busy preserving local architectural heritage across Devon and Cornwall. While we've been focused on our projects, we're excited to share what we've been working on. 🔍 Coming Soon: We're preparing a comprehensive Investment Guide for property owners interested in heritage projects. This resource will offer valuable insights into our expertise and approach to architectural conservation. Thank you to all our clients and partners who have made 2024 such a remarkable year. Here's to continuing our mission of preserving history, one building at a time.
