The next challenge of the 21st century is here: water availability, use, and management, particularly in the Mountain West of the United States. Patricia Limerick's book, "A Ditch In Time," sheds light on the significance of water in the Western US throughout history and its impact on the present and future. Disagreements are surfacing within the Colorado River Basin, dividing it into two factions who disagree on water management across the upper and lower basins, feeding large population areas. We must address water management issues today to plan for a sustainable water future for the US. Major water news today from the California Department of Water Resources, which has released its Final Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the proposed Delta Conveyance Project, a key project to California’s Water Resilience Portfolio and Governor Newsom’s Water Supply Strategy. The environmental review included a 142-day public comment period and is the final step DWR is required to take under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) prior to certification of the EIR and approval of the project. Following certification of the Final EIR, DWR use the information in determining whether to approve the project, an alternative, or no project. WHAT GOVERNOR NEWSOM SAID: “Climate change is threatening our access to clean drinking water, diminishing future supplies for millions of Californians – doing nothing is not an option. After the three driest years on record, we didn’t have the infrastructure to fully take advantage of an exceptionally wet year, which will become more and more critical as our weather whiplashes between extremes. This proposed project is essential to updating our water system for millions of Californians. This new approach, redesigned following community and environmental input, is how we can build a California of the future.”
