Imagine fences stretching from the western US all the way to the moon and back. These barriers pose serious challenges for migratory animals like pronghorn antelope and mule deer, often blocking their paths to safety. Last winter alone, half of 45 collared pronghorns in Wyoming perished because fences and highways stood in their way. But there's hope. Scientists are now turning to Artificial Intelligence, which boasts a 70% success rate in spotting fences in aerial images. This cutting-edge tool could help conservationists and land managers speed up the process of removing harmful barriers or installing wildlife-friendly alternatives, giving these animals a better chance at survival. 🧸 Does Wildlife Rehabilitation Really Work? 🐻 With fewer than 500 sun bears left in the wild, the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre faces a critical challenge. They've released 12 orphaned cubs, but a pressing question remains: are these efforts truly helping? Gathering the answer isn't easy. GPS collars, meant to track bears for a year, often go silent within just 3 months due to malfunctions and damage. This issue isn’t unique to sun bears—lost collars, high costs, and scattered data plague wildlife rehabilitation efforts worldwide. Yet, there is hope. By creating centralized data hubs, collaborating closely with scientists, and harnessing the power of citizen science, conservationists may finally uncover if rewilding is a lifeline for endangered species. 🌍The Unexpected Legacy of Pablo Escobar: Hippos in Colombia 🦛 How did hippos, native to sub-Saharan Africa, end up thriving in the Colombian jungle? The answer traces back to the eccentric whims of Pablo Escobar, the infamous drug lord who used his vast fortune to collect wild animals. After Escobar's death in 1993, his hippos were deemed too dangerous to relocate and were left behind. Now, up to 169 hippos roam the Magdalena Basin, posing threats to human safety and local ecosystems. Officials are considering culling, relocations, and sterilization, but complete eradication seems unlikely. Colombia faces this unusual ecological challenge for the foreseeable future.
