Remaining in New England, we proudly highlight our next 1% for the Planet environmental partner, the Maine Coast Heritage Trust (MCHT) – a nonprofit land conservation organization protecting and caring for vital lands on the coast of Maine. Since its founding, the MCHT has collaborated with landowners, coastal communities, and other partners to conserve, protect, educate, restore, and steward Maine’s extraordinary coastal lands for their renowned scenic beauty, ecological value, outdoor recreational opportunities, and contribution to community well-being. Those partnerships have conserved iconic islands, critical wildlife habitat, coastal watersheds, water access sites, downtown greenspaces, and epic places for people to explore. To date, the MCHT has helped protect over 170,000 acres and 330 islands, now holds more than 300 conservation easements, and owns and cares for more than 120 preserves that are free and open to the public – numbers that continue to grow every year. An outstanding crew of full-time staff and seasonal crew members work in every coastal county in Maine to build and maintain trails and campsites, bring people out on the land, and keep shores clean. The Trust works not only to protect vital lands, but to expand access to the coast, and connect the next generation to the natural world. Remarkably those making a living in the Gulf of Maine or who are just looking for a place to launch a boat to get out and have some fun can now rely on only 1% of the Maine coast for guaranteed access. 📣 There's a new Conservation Plan for the Kittantinny Ridge Conservation Landscape! The plan "frames a strategy for coordinated land conservation, natural resource protection, and land stewardship in the future." In their survey research, it was found that "86% of survey respondents indicated that they or their agency/organization/business/or community identify with and feel connected to the Kittatinny Ridge Conservation Landscape region." NALT has five primary focus areas across the United States with a density of existing conservation lands; Eastern Pennsylvania, Western North Carolina, the coast of South Carolina, North Georgia, and Central Alabama. These easements, particularly in our Georgia focus area, are within some of the most biodiverse regions of the country but are also experiencing some of the highest development pressure. What does the BLM’s Public Lands Rule mean for outdoor recreation? The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has released its final Public Lands Rule, the culmination of many years of work to better balance conservation with development and extraction on BLM lands. BLM lands—and our public lands in general—are facing unprecedented challenges. Americans’ expectations for our public lands, and how the BLM should oversee them, are also evolving. Outdoor recreation is growing in popularity, and visits to BLM lands are increasing. While the rule is very much focused on conservation, it also supports outdoor recreation. It includes a specific objective to “Provide for healthy lands and waters that support sustainable outdoor recreation experiences for current and future generations.” Some lawmakers, as well as extractive industries have targeted the rule, and members of Congress need to hear that conservation is an important part of managing public lands now and into the future. 👩🔬 🧬 How can funding native trees accelerate farmland regen techniques? Today's highlight: The Devery's Creek Project, led by Conservation Volunteers New Zealand. It's a patch rich with regeneration potential. This retired farmland preserves precious remnant Kahikatea swamp forest and a Significant Natural Area with regenerating wetland and forest habitats. 🌱 The 5,000 native trees you've funded for this planting will support the first stage of the team's ongoing project. They'll be tackling several knowledge gaps by assessing cryptic species (especially herpetofauna), installing fish passage aids, developing low-chemical approaches for land health, eDNA testing and water quality testing. Planting Projects are a national knowledge hub of on-the-ground insights. Their mahi and expertise is vital to the successful regeneration of Aotearoa New Zealand's land. 👇 Each native tree has an epic story.
