It's been 20 years since I have opened my LinkedIn account, which has taught me a few things about this platform. Surprisingly some things have not changed, others did, but some golden etiquette rules with be forever relevant. Here's how I operate. 🔌 CONNECT - I have eliminated the connect button long time ago and replace it with a FOLLOW button. People who I have never met still think that it is OK to connect to strangers, even if you work at the same company (but never met). Let me shock you: it's not OK and I used to reject and report to LinkedIn a ton of these random requests. Replacing the CONNECT button with the FOLLOW button means that it is OK for you (complete stranger) to follow my updates, but I am not forced to follow you, a person I haven't met. There are 3 exceptions to this: (1) whenever I give a talk at an event, I ask people to connect with me on LinkedIn, so by the location of the person and date I can tell the request came from my talk, but still, please include a note. It's not OK to do it before the event BTW, just because you saw my name on the agenda. (2) When a person includes a polite message acknowledging we never met, but would be interested in connecting directly. Sometimes these are misleading messages because this is a technique to open a line of dialog to spam you. So just send the note with the connect request and off you go. If your second message is that you are curious about my take on XYZ to book a meeting yada-yada, you are blocked out. Still I'd prefer if strangers click the follow button if they are so interested in connecting with me. (3) Third and final exception are the people which I WILL MEET in the next days/weeks because we have a meeting scheduled, and for some reason you decide that connect on LinkedIn before hand makes sense. I usually accept the request after the meeting. 🤡 RECRUITERS - It seems most recruiters have no idea of what they are doing. I get the most exotic inmail spam messages sometimes. Almost all are blocked so they won't send it again. Also, using the CONNECT function to get to me means that your employer is trying to use LinkedIn for free, which is not OK. If you are a real recruiting company CONNECT requests are not for recruiters. If you have a serious proposal because I have turned on the "OPEN TO WORK" switch, then please don't waste my time with vague descriptions and half information. No details, no meeting. 🤢 THIS IS NOT FACEBOOK/INSTA/TIKTOK - Bringing your personal life to LinkedIn is beyond cringe. The reason some keep doing it, it's because it works in terms of engagement. In reality this high level of engagement happens because most people confuse authenticity with lack of self-awareness these days. In case you have never seen, there's some truly cringey stuff on this platform. Check out this X account and try not to 🤮 https://lnkd.in/eYqiuqAn There would be a ton more to say, but this post is too getting cringey long 😎

Its #woofwednesday and my fluffy dude is being an awesome caretaker to my littlest dude while I get some work done. There are those who think personal posts like this don't belong on LinkedIn. I say boo to that. We discuss our lives with our coworkers - why would you not want to be your authentic self here? I for one would love to see more #dogsoflinkedin than rants and terrible advice. #recruiterlife #nowhiring

Administrative and Executive Virtual Assistant | Corporate Professional | Elevating Businesses with Exceptional Support and Expertise
Has anyone been getting a flood of people reaching out to them asking them if they are interested in supplementing their income? It's becoming a daily occurrence, and honestly, it's galling. Unsolicited messages with vague or unsubstantiated claims of financial success are not effective in sparking meaningful conversations. To all the people sending these messages, please respect our time and connections. If you have a genuine opportunity or connection to share, I'm happy to engage. But let's keep the spam to a minimum, shall we? 🙏🙏🙏 Please let’s focus on building meaningful relationships and having real conversations on LinkedIn.

Help me continue to turn lemons into lemonade. If you do a search for “layoff stigma” (without quotes), does my article at GlobalNerdy.com, “No stigma, no shame,” appear as one of the top results, or even — as in my own case — as the number one result? Please let me know! Being able to demonstrate this level of SEO-fu, on top of being able to program well and give engaging presentations will be a big boost for my job search.
