🎉 Today is our 17th birthday! As the only nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting, restoring, and expanding America’s National Conservation Lands, we're so grateful for your ongoing support. National Conservation Lands are among the most essential and spectacular natural, cultural, and archaeological places in the country. They include National Monuments, National Conservation Areas, Wilderness and Wilderness Study Areas, Wild and Scenic Rivers, and National Scenic and Historic Trails. Here’s how we protect, restore, and expand National Conservation Lands: 🏞️ We harness community passion through our Friends Grassroots Network, which includes over 80 local groups that advocate for National Conservation Lands. 🌻 We secure protections and improve policies by working with presidential administrations, Congress, and the Bureau of Land Management. 🌿 We increase public support by generating greater visibility and funding for enduring protections. As we continue our efforts, join us in safeguarding millions of acres in the U.S. for future generations: visit conservationlands.org. #ProtectWhatMatters #Conservation #PublicLands #NationalConservationLands

June 8 th 2024 . World Oceans Day !!!! This year's World Oceans Day theme is "Awaken New Depths," with a focus on "Catalysing Action for Our Ocean and Climate." This year's World Oceans Day will emphasise advancing efforts to create a healthier planet and a more equitable society.# Our contribution begins with supporting conservation organizations through donations or volunteer work, practicing mindful water usage, adopting responsible waste disposal habits, engaging in community initiatives, and endorsing eco-friendly products. Even seemingly small actions, like conserving energy judiciously in our household, play a significant role in advancing these goals. Together, these steps can profoundly impact ocean preservation and mitigate the adverse effects of climate change #WorldOcansDay #BlueplanetConservation #Ecofriendlyliving.
🐠On #WorldOceansDay, we're looking back at a project that was launched with the Swiss Re Foundation’s support. The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and local partners began training brigades of local volunteers in Mexico to repair and restore storm-damaged portions of the Mesoamerican Reef. Later, the Foundation teamed up with TNC to scale in Belize, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico. In this video, Victor Faux, a coral restoration practitioner from Belize, shares why he cares about the reef and how the brigades help conserve it. Victor is one of the nearly 50% of Belizeans who depend on the reef for coastal protection, their livelihoods or both. Find out more: https://ow.ly/uYS050SbCcp

For millennia, Indigenous peoples have used fire as a vital tool for land stewardship, fostering biodiversity, healthy forests, and resilient ecosystems. In 1850, however, California criminalized cultural burning as part of broader efforts to suppress Indigenous practices, and eventually the state practiced a policy of complete fire suppression. The consequences of this history have been devastating and have even contributed to catastrophic wildfires that are now more frequent than ever. In recent years, California has begun to reckon with these wrongdoings and recognize the value of fire on the landscape. Senate Bill 310, sponsored by the Karuk Tribe and currently awaiting the Governor’s signature, aims to break down barriers to cultural burning by acknowledging Tribal sovereignty and fostering collaboration between Tribal governments and state agencies. This legislation is a vital step toward restoring forest health, building resilience, and advancing both cultural and environmental justice.
Cultural burning, a practice central to Indigenous cultures and land stewardship, was criminalized by California in 1850, a history contributing to today’s wildfire crisis. A new bill in California, sponsored by the Karuk Tribe and awaiting the Governor’s signature, supports breaking down barriers to cultural burning to restore landscape resilience and honor tribal sovereignty. In 2022, the world made a bold commitment to protect and conserve at least 30% of land and water globally by 2030. To help turn this commitment into reality, the Bloomberg Ocean Initiative and Oceana are working to fast-track the creation of new marine protected areas (MPAs) and other conservation measures. Here are some recent wins on the path to 30x30: https://bloom.bg/3L5bWNY #Philanthropy #ClimateAction

The majestic, powerful, and fearless lion, often referred to as the "King of the Jungle," embodies strength, courage, and majesty. World Lion Day, observed annually on August 10, aims to raise awareness about the conservation and protection of this magnificent creature. Regrettably, their population is rapidly declining due to various challenges, which include habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict. As responsible individuals, we must take action to address this critical issue. Educating ourselves and others about the threats faced by lions is crucial. Additionally, supporting conservation organizations and raising awareness can make a significant difference in ensuring their survival. #WorldLionDay #August10 #Harithkram #BeyondTheBoundaries

"The tribally informed co-management plan for the national monument is the first of its kind in U.S. history. The plan is a collaborative approach between the federal government and tribes on how to steward Bears Ears, which can include tribal ancestral history and ideas for protections through land conservation and traditional education." #BearsEars #SelfDetermination #IndigenousPeoples #NativeMonument https://lnkd.in/gSet2qrJ

Book Recommendation: The Big Burn. Timothy Egan vividly captures the intense battle against a the largest wildfire in US history in 1910. Egan's portrayal extends beyond the fire, highlighting the visionary and pioneering efforts of President Teddy Roosevelt and forester Gifford Pinchot in championing conservation as we know it today, and creating a profound legacy of establishing the concept of public land as a national treasure for all citizens. It's a great reminder that public land conservation is and can be disaster prevention and preparedness. If you're using Hoopla Digital with your local library, the book is available for free for download! #BookRecommendation #TheBigBurn #Conservation #NationalTreasure #PublicLand #PublicLandConservation #DisasterRecovery #DisasterPreparation #SupportYourLocalLibrary

Check out this insightful article from my Co-Director, Charissa Miijessepe-Wilson, on Indigenous leadership and stewardship of the Bears Ears National Monument, along with other ancestral lands and “resources.”
The Coalition's Co-Director, Charissa Miijessepe-Wilson (Potawatomi), recently contributed an article to the Grand Canyon Trust's Advocate magazine. In the piece, she reflects on the critical role of Indigenous leadership and Traditional Knowledge in the ongoing efforts to protect and steward Bears Ears. Charissa emphasizes that this stewardship is not just for the present generation, but for future ones as well, underscoring the essential role Indigenous leadership plays in shaping long-term conservation efforts. "What conservation means to me is we need to listen. We need to remember how to care for the land. We need to reconnect. A lot of us have been ripped from our homelands, and we’re losing our cultural practices. We need to take the time to reconnect. We need to relearn. So how do I show up in the conservation space? It sounds cheesy, but I operate as an 'aspiring ancestor.' How are my actions contributing to ancestors who aren’t born yet?" https://lnkd.in/gNZiizUn
