Last week on August 8, we celebrated the first anniversary of President Biden's designation of Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni - Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument in Arizona. 🌟 Spanning nearly one million acres, the national monument designation protects lands and waters crucial to Indigenous communities. We remain committed to safeguarding sacred lands and waters like Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni for future generations. #ProtectWhatMatters #NationalConservationLands #MonumentsForAll

Happy #MonarchMonday! Some states are starting to see caterpillars, so it’s a perfect time for a caterpillar identification refresh! Monarch caterpillars have a few look-alikes, making it more difficult to identify different species. Pictured are a black swallowtail caterpillar, a queen caterpillar, and a monarch caterpillar. An easy way to tell a queen and monarch apart is by the number of filaments. Monarchs have two sets, whereas queens have three. To differentiate between black swallowtails and monarchs, note the dots in the black swallowtail’s pattern versus the stripes of monarchs. What are your go-to ways of identifying caterpillars? #Monarch #MonarchButterfly #monarchcaterpillar #MorethanMonarchs #monarchhabitat #pollinatorhabitat #gardenformonarchs #Pollinators #Insects #PlantNative #PlantDiverse #PlantMilkweed #insectidentification

Grantee partner First Light has a collection of hundreds of books, essays and media compiled on their website informing how to do collaborative work better. "This collection of resources has helped our community learn from many perspectives over time and unlearn the foundational myths of dominant culture." This article is part of a series by The Atlantic called “Who Owns America’s Wilderness?” and can be found under the section "Conservation's role in Indigenous land taking" on the First Light website. "Return the National Parks to the Tribes—The jewels of America’s landscape should belong to America’s original peoples" by David Treuer, is a long-form article that traces the pervasive role of land theft in establishing the National Parks, and closes with a vision of how to move forward. On March 30, 2023, the Vatican rejected the 15th-century #DiscoveryDoctrine, which aimed to justify the colonial-era seizure of Indigenous lands. Despite this rejection, reparative measures and extensive land returns to #IndigenousPeoples are still needed to address the lasting harm caused by the Doctrine. The ongoing impacts of colonialism and systemic oppression faced by #IndigenousPeoples worldwide underscore the need for continued efforts toward healing and restorative justice. #EverythingBack #Healing #RestorativeJustice #LandBack #CulturalSurvival

Public lands are Tribal lands. National monuments on federal public lands contain historic landmarks, historic and prehistoric structures, and cultural and sacred sites for the first stewards of our lands and waters, the Tribes. This permanent protection designation safeguards these precious resources and honors Indigenous communities who want a say in managing these lands. Where did the attachment to land come from? Did the early Vedic people give land grants? Episode 027 answers these question while taking the hymns and verses from the Rig Veda. In this discussion we discuss and trace the path that led to transformation of blood attachment to land attachment. We also see how the second urbanization started while creating the foundation for the establishment of monarchy. https://lnkd.in/grsWZzqF #history #india #indianhistory #ancienthistory #upsc #ssc #cuet

Today marks the end of Reconciliation Week, which concludes with Mabo Day. Eddie Koiki Mabo was a dedicated and courageous advocate, campaigner and family man. On 20 May 1982, Mabo, along with fellow Mer Islanders Reverend David Passi, Celuia Mapo Salee, Sam Passi, and James Rice, initiated a legal claim in the High Court of Australia for ownership of their lands on the island of Mer. With Mabo as the lead plaintiff, the case became known as the 'Mabo Case'. Nearly ten years later, on 21 January 1992, Eddie Koiki Mabo passed away from cancer at the age of 56. On 3 June 1992, the High Court of Australia ruled in favour of Mabo and his fellow plaintiffs. This landmark decision recognised, for the first time in Australian law, the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to their lands based on their traditional connection and occupation. This ruling challenged the British claim that Australia was 'terra nullius' (land belonging to no-one). In the following year, the Australian Parliament passed the Native Title Act 1993, establishing a system for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to claim native title over their lands. For more insights on this topic, I found an interesting article on www.koorihistory.com (an incredible and generous resource I was recently introduced to) that discusses the complexities and issues within the Native Title process. It’s worth a read: https://lnkd.in/eKx8fixY Eddie Mabo’s legacy as a hero endures through his significant contributions that we still remember to this day. Australia was never "terra nullius". Never was and never has been.
