As we work towards fostering a more inclusive and supportive construction industry, we've made it mandatory for registered construction sites to provide access to appropriately-fitting women's PPE. Jo Rieny, one of our Scheme Monitors highlights the critical need for properly fitting personal protective equipment for women. She explains how ensuring access to well-fitting PPE – which is currently often only designed for men, is essential for enhancing safety, promoting inclusivity, and supporting the growing number of women in the construction industry. The discussion calls for industry-wide changes to accommodate the diverse workforce and improve working conditions for all. #ukconstruction #constructionindustry #ppeforwomen #womeninconstruction

With Women in Construction Week happening all week and International Women’s Day coming tomorrow, we think it’s a great time to highlight an issue lots of women still run into on job sites. So let’s talk about PPE. A lot of traditional PPE that was designed around men just doesn’t fit women well. And “scaling down” that PPE to fit women doesn't always work. This shows when you ask women on Canadian job sites about PPE. 🔨58% of them say they use PPE that’s the wrong size at least some of the time 🔨28% say they don’t wear all the required PPE because of issues with how it fits (buff.ly/3ToXXaO). To deal with all this, women regularly pay out of pocket to buy their own PPE, or modify their gear for safety and comfort. Almost 40% of women say they’ve been injured or had some other incident because of ill-fitting PPE. This is a week to celebrate women in construction and push for an even more inclusive and accepting industry. We have fantastic contractors here in Nova Scotia and we hope they’ll take extra steps to ensure their workers' gear keeps them as safe as possible❤️. #InspireInclusion #IWD2024

👷♀️ A Positive Step Towards Inclusive PPE in Construction 👷♀️ The construction industry is making strides towards inclusivity with the recent commitment by the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) to mandate the provision of women’s PPE across all its sites. This move aims to ensure that women have access to properly fitted and suitable sizes of PPE, addressing the challenges faced by many in the industry. Philip Sayer, head of assurance and challenge at CCS, emphasised the importance of improving inclusivity and diversity in construction, highlighting the scheme's role in promoting female-specific PPE provision. This initiative follows a survey by the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC), revealing the need for better-fitting PPE for women in the industry. Katy Robinson, Senior Project Manager at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, and NAWIC Yorkshire Campaign Manager, lauded the decision, emphasising that well-fitting PPE should be the minimum standard, not just the best practice. The move by CCS sets a positive example for the industry, encouraging other health and safety accreditations to follow suit. With women currently making up 15.8% of the construction industry, initiatives like the #PPEthatfits campaign by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) are crucial in driving change and ensuring a safer working environment for all. Is your company doing what it can to support this campaign and their female work force? #ConstructionIndustry #InclusivePPE #DiversityandInclusion #PPEthatfits #SafetyAtWork #ConsiderateConstructorsScheme #pragmaticconsulting #pragmatictraining #constructiontraining #constructionindustry #constructionuk #hse #citb

According to recent ONS labour statistics, approximately 16% of the construction workforce is made up of women. If we are to improve this figure to help address the skills shortage as well as increase diversity, we need to build a more inclusive industry. One issue that has been raised over the years that may make women feel unwelcome and unsupported is poor access to PPE equipment that fits and has been tested on women. Around March, there was a number of articles and debates published on amending the Personal Protective Equipment at Work regulations to include the mention of women to ensure that it is mandatory to supply well-fitting PPE for both improved comfort and safety. You can read about this in The Independent article here: https://zurl.co/rtIw Whether or not the bill is passed, businesses can–and should–implement changes. For example, the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) makes it clear in the 2024 amendments to its code that companies should be "providing suitable PPE in female sizes". ⛔ CECA are proud to be supporting NAWIC QLD - National Association of Women in Construction in their campaign to highlight why inclusive PPE matters & have teamed up to run a 1 hour FREE webinar for all CECA members. 🚺 We all recognise that ill-fitting personal protective equipment (PPE) for women has been an issue in the construction industry for decades. NAWIC Yorkshire recently found that 59.6% of employers do not provide women’s specific PPE, and with the number of women in the industry increasing every year, it’s a problem that we need to solve urgently. 👷♀️ Women have had to suffer through the negative effects of wearing ill-fitting unisex PPE. It is not just uncomfortable, it is DANGEROUS. Just some of the issues identified by women include; ⚠ Oversized boots causing a trip hazard, discomfort, and health problems (i.e.. Tendinitis, Morton’s Neuroma) ⚠ Oversized gloves causing issues with gripping handrails and tools ⚠ Baggy clothing causing trip & trap hazard ⚠ Difficulty in adjusting harnesses to fit ⚠ Ill-fitting PPE restricting movements and requiring constant adjustment ⚠ Ill-fitting goggles steaming up and hampering vision. 🏗 With the UK industry reporting 45 fatalities in 2022/2023 alone, surely we could and SHOULD be doing more to get the basics covered. 🙍♀️ Join Katy Robinson, as she talks about the barriers to receiving women-specific PPE, the effects of ill-fitting PPE, and what we can all do to become more inclusive employers and better protect our female workforce. There will be an opportunity to ask questions at the end of the session Eventbrite booking link below: https://lnkd.in/ez2XsxCY

WIC Week: Workplace Safety. Women in construction face unique workplace safety challenges, such as inadequate personal protective equipment designed for male proportions, which can increase their risk of injury on the job. Additionally, a lack of proper training and awareness programs tailored to women's needs can leave them vulnerable to accidents and hazards on construction sites. Employers must prioritize inclusivity and address these specific safety concerns to ensure the well-being of all workers, regardless of gender. Here we have Kathleen Rapp, our Safety Coordinator. Kathleen is excited to contribute to the safety culture of the construction sector, enabling every worker to return home safely to their families each day. #WIC #WICWeek #WomenInConstruction #WorkplaceSafety #SafetyFirst #MechanicalContractor #HVAC #Plumbing #HeatingandCooling #MechanicalEngineering #Construction #BuildingServices #BuildingMaintenance #FacilitiesManagement #EnergyEfficiency #CommercialHVAC #IndustrialMechanical #MechanicalDesign #HVACLife #MechanicalServices

As we celebrate Women in Construction Week, it's crucial to acknowledge the pivotal role of properly fitting Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in empowering female workers. Reflecting on my own journey in the construction industry, I vividly recall the challenges of finding PPE tailored for women. Ill-fitting attire not only compromised safety but also hindered confidence and productivity. However, times have changed. The evolution of women-specific #PPE signifies a significant shift, demonstrating our industry's commitment to inclusivity and empowerment. By prioritizing the availability of PPE designed for women, we not only ensure their physical well-being but also cultivate an environment where they can excel with confidence and pride. This National Association of Women in Construction Week, let's celebrate the progress made in embracing women-specific PPE and reaffirm our dedication to fostering an inclusive and supportive construction industry where every worker can thrive. #WICWeek #wicweek244 #26yearsofwicweek #womeninconstructionweek2024
