ZF is making its electric motors for passenger cars ever more sustainable - and more powerful at the same time. Dr. João Bonifácio explained the various concepts at the Advanced E-Motor Technologies 2024 conference currently taking place in Munich: • With EVSys800, ZF has developed an 800 V Compact E-Drive system that does not require heavy rare earth elements. It is nevertheless the world champion in terms of torque density, can be on the road for longer at peak performance thanks to an innovative cooling concept and also takes up less installation space in the vehicle. • With I2SM (In-rotor Inductively Excited Synchronous Machine), ZF has adopted an electric motor concept that is completely magnet-free, as the rotor is also fitted with copper coils that generate a magnetic field instead of permanent magnets. Although the technical principle is well known, it was previously considered to be less efficient and less powerful. During my conversations with EV manufacturers and OEMs, enhancing efficiency of Battery Thermal Management Systems (BTMS) comes across as a top priority. This is because poorly designed systems can lead to thermal runaway, which poses significant safety risks. Thermal runaway is a condition where heat generated inside a battery is not properly managed and leads to a self-sustaining increase in temperature. This can cause the battery to rapidly heat up, leading to fires or explosions. To prevent thermal runaway, it is crucial to have a well designed battery thermal management systems in place. These systems ensure that heat generated during charging, discharging, or normal operation is dissipated efficiently, keeping the battery within a safe temperature range. Enhanced simulations is one way to minimize the risk of thermal runaway and create safer and more reliable electric vehicles. Besides range, safety of EVs has already a crucial consideration point for consumers. Addressing the safety issue will help in faster global transition to EVs. Is Saietta Plc the EV worlds most attractive take over target bargain as it heads into likely administration? Ernst and Young have been engaged to look for a buyer. The most likely buyer is Saietta’s joint partner VNA however a mystery major Indian OEM has long been building up to a launch announcement with Saietta who may get involved too. The technology IP is one reason to buy of course. It offers a world leading electric motor combined with drive trains for the two/three wheel market and of course Arylo in the picture below. They have real contracts now, many more in their sales cycle all in the worlds no 1 growth area for light EV manufacturing, India. Saietta is not some IP heavy manufacturing light weight. It’s at the manufacturing stage now, both in India and the U.K. It has just ran out of runway funding by trying to do much under the previous CEO but ok’d by the existing board. What I have to say about them is potentially libellous so Ill keep quiet. Other than to say that the Saietta board spent £67M of investor funds getting to this final stage. The current market capitalisation is £2M. I suspect that a bidding war will commence for this remarkable asset. Good luck Saietta workers in your next journey. Keep the faith!
