#Executivedysfunction is something many neurodivergent people experience. The process of visualizing steps involved to reach a final goal can be a useful exercise when followed up with practical activities. It is important to talk about the final product and visualize it as your starting point. This activity can easily be used as a language and communication goal in speech and language therapy.

What does functional speech and language therapy look like when your client has a cognitive communication disorder?? Last week I met my client and his SW they’ve been playing chess together recently. I was invited to have a game. Lack of processing, impulsivity and experience meant that I took the first game quite quickly. In round 2 I suggested that we articulate our thinking before making each move. Impulsivity was halted as the question “why” was asked. Processing time increased as did comprehension as we both explained our thinking and rationale. Verbal explanation opportunities were explored as “because” wasn’t accepted as a reason. Collaboration was embedded as the SW teamed up with my client to consider the possible ways of taking my key pieces. *The game took a much longer time. *It was a tough match *It was acknowledged by the client that he’d done a much better job of the strategy *The SW went away with some great ideas and techniques to use everyday opportunities to increase verbal explanation, increase expectations, slow down impulsivity ( and run the risk of being beaten at chess more often. ) The importance of everyday people in everyday tasks is key to making meaningful progress with rehabilitation. I learned this from the late great Mark Ylvisaker and his teaching continues to impact my practice daily.
