I fear that one of the biggest hurdles we will have to overcome before making a dent in the road toll is keeping up with the increasing gap between what we can afford to do to maintain our roads and what we should be doing. Safer cars, safer speeds and better driver behaviour will get us so far, but we'll need better designed and maintained roads to get closer to zero road toll. https://lnkd.in/gd-ksvCA Local government is responsible for 80% of NSW roads. Yet a disturbing proportion of NSW Councils report insufficient income to fund maintenance and renewal of existing roads, let alone funding for safety improvements at a scale that'll make a difference. The NSW Audit Office found that regional areas make up one-third of the population and two-thirds of the road toll. This is almost the same as what it was ten years ago. https://lnkd.in/gKZ9vVDC If we are serious about road safety, then it's time to have a good look at how we fund their maintenance, renewal and improvement, especially in regional areas! #roadsafety IPWEA NSW & ACTIPWEA
Twitter 6 Jan 2024 "NSW's National #RoadSafety Strategy commitment is 50% road death reduction from 332 (2018-20 base) to less than 166 by 2030. So last year, no more than 282 lives should have been lost yet 350+ people killed in NSW! We are not taking the problem seriously! https://lnkd.in/g5-BeGWY" https://lnkd.in/gdd3bKz4

Recent national data shows a 21.6% increase in road deaths over the last 12 months in the Northern Territory, including 19 lives lost in the past four months alone. The Automobile Association NT (AANT) is calling on the Northern Territory Government to share data about road quality, the causes of fatality crashes and the effectiveness of law enforcement activities. This information needs to be made publicly available to create more effective road safety policies that will save lives. AANT CEO Simon Matthias says government needs to step up. “Too many people are losing their lives or suffering life changing trauma due to road crashes. The NT Government has data that can be used to better inform road safety fundings and policies, but this information is not currently shared. It is now time for the Territory to follow Queensland’s example as the first state to commit to data transparency. Territorians deserve a data driven response”. In the year to March 31, 1,286 people died on Australian roads – up 8.2% from the previous year—nearly 100 more deaths. The National Road Safety Strategy, which aims to cut deaths by half by 2030, is failing. Road deaths are 17.2% higher than when it commenced. It’s time for real action. The Commonwealth must compel state and territory governments to publish their secret data about crash causes, road conditions, and enforcement as a condition of receiving federal road funding. This data would help experts produce more effective road safety policies. 🚸 Does your local MP support this common-sense proposal? Find out at https://lnkd.in/g3MKxwse #roadsafety #datasaveslives

Australia’s road safety crisis is worsening, with road deaths up 10.2 per cent in the year to July 31. Current government approaches to road safety are failing. While the data that can tell us what is going wrong is held by state and territory governments, much of it is not made public. It is time state and territory governments stopped hiding the data and agreed to federal government calls for them to release data on the causes of crashes, the condition of our roads and the effectiveness of policing. Data transparency will save lives. #datasaveslives #roadsafety #datatransparency

Highlights the importance of knowing who is accessing a telecoms site on land, and what they are doing. With operators seeking (and exercising) more wide-ranging rights for access without notice, and at all times of the day and night, this can only add to the issues that farmers are already having to face on security and rural gangs. https://lnkd.in/dM_WrXCH
