We are thrilled to have been part of the Westminster Forum Projects policy conference today, focusing on "Improving Participation and Diversity in Apprenticeships." Our Director, Andy Rayner, had the privilege of joining a panel discussion that explored critical areas within the apprenticeship landscape: ✅ Closing the disability apprenticeship gap ✅ Enhancing ethnic minority inclusion ✅ Promoting apprenticeships as a late-career option During the discussion, Andy emphasised the pressing issues facing the construction industry. He discussed the skills gap in construction is already impacting our ability to meet the demands of our economy for an effective built environment, with the situation bound to worsen due to an ageing workforce and a shortage of young talent joining the sector. The construction sector is facing a skills shortage, both lacking the skilled workforce to deliver the new homes planned across the UK and also specific expertise in key areas like sustainability, modern methods of construction and technology. As the UK Government’s Timber in Construction Policy Roadmap identified - the shortage of skills is a barrier to the increased use of structural timber in construction. To attract new talent to the industry and continue to develop our existing workforce it is vital we invest in training. In recognition of this, the Structural Timber Association Ltd recently launched a new Skills Hub and Installer Training Scheme aiming to equip the construction workforce with the skills needed to help deliver on timber's potential to contribute to a more sustainable built environment. We're halfway through National Apprenticeship Week! Day 3's focus is: Expanding Registered Apprenticeship to Underserved Populations. Underrepresented groups is one of the largest barriers of apprenticeship programs. ANEW's RISE Up 4 Equity program works to collectively overcome obstacles such as these found in apprenticeships, and in particular, the construction industry. As an organization built on the ideology of representation among underserved populations, it's important that we continuously promote programs like RISE Up that work to change the culture that's not advantageous for all people. An article clearly worth pondering! „So the dominant business model of what we now refer to as tier one contractors is primarily an exercise in contract trading. They don’t do construction, they do contract trading. That’s what they do.“ When the main focus of contracting is: who will compensate most/all my losses if things go wrong, we all concentrate way to much on problems rather than on solutions. Ought the goal not much rather be: what do we need to do in order to avoid the loss? It appears like in education: Do we make kids learn better by highlighting the punishments they will have to endure if they fail or by applying incentives and rewards? What do you think? It is time to rethink procurement in construction and the adjacent industries.
