🔬 We held our inaugural Victorian Paediatric Cancer Consortium Scientific Advisory Committees (SAC) meeting yesterday, cementing our commitment to scientific rigour. Esteemed national and international childhood cancer experts convened online to discuss critical areas of unmet need in childhood cancer research. Their advice will guide our funding priorities to accelerate childhood cancer research and innovation. Our two distinct SACs show our unique commitment to independent scientific expertise: 𝟭. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗦𝗔𝗖, chaired by Board Director Andrew Wilks, focuses on translating discoveries into clinical applications. 𝟮. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗦𝗔𝗖, led by Board Director Grant McArthur AO, guides research on clinical trials and health services. Our SAC members include Phil Kearney, Martine Keenan, Deb White, Robyn Strong, Christopher Sweeney, Professor Tracey O'Brien, AM Martha Grootenhuis, Glenn Marshall and Brandon Wainwright AM. With our 8 consortium partners, we’re helping to fast-track paediatric oncology outcomes to benefit childhood cancer patients everywhere. #VPCC #ChildhoodCancerCare #ChildhoodCancer #CancerResearch #Collaboration #MakingADifference

Pediatric cancer research is complex, and researchers cannot tackle the plethora of research priorities that exist on their own. In fact, there is plenty of evidence suggesting that patient engagement from the outset of study development can and has led to improved research quality and impact. This is possible by helping refine research questions, providing guidance on patient outcomes of importance, informing recruitment strategies, and advising on knowledge mobilization strategies. The ACCESS Network is the direct result of a partnership between patient advocates and healthcare professionals to voice and address growing concerns in the pediatric cancer community in Canada. However, questions remain regarding how to effectively engage marginalized and vulnerable populations, such as pediatric patients, in research on an on-going basis. Over the holidays, the U.S. passed a new spending package that came at a significant cost to the pediatric cancer community. Key provisions aimed at advancing treatments, improving access, and incentivizing research were removed from the package without explanation. Initially included in the spending bill were several critical initiatives: 🎗️ The Gabriella Miller Kids First Research Act 2.0, extending the NIH’s Kids First Research Program. 🎗️ The Accelerating Kids to Research Act, improving Medicaid accessibility for specialized pediatric cancer treatments across state lines. 🎗️ The Creating Hope Reauthorization Act, which incentivizes pediatric drug development and has already produced 65 new medications. 🎗️ The Give Kids a Chance Act, enabling relapsed pediatric cancer patients to access combination drug therapies. While the Gabriella Miller Kids First Research Act 2.0 was eventually passed as a standalone bill, the other provisions remain in limbo. This decision underscores an ongoing challenge: Federal funding for pediatric cancer research remains critically underfunded, with only 4% of all cancer research funds allocated to pediatric cancers. Meanwhile, cancer remains the leading cause of disease-related death among children and young adults under 20 in the U.S. At the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation, we remain steadfast in our mission to address these gaps. Through our institutional priorities - Powering Research, Supporting Survivorship, and Ensuring Equitable Care - we have invested more than $61 million into groundbreaking research and innovative therapies to accelerate cures and improve lives. "The reduction in research and care funding is a devastating setback for the pediatric cancer community," said Danielle Fragalla, MSE, CEO. "This only reinforces the urgent need for us to continue advancing care, supporting cutting-edge research, and improving conditions for pediatric cancer patients and their families.” We invite you to join us in making a difference by becoming a partner or sponsor to help bridge the funding gap. Together, we can ensure no child faces cancer alone and that every family has access to the care and hope they deserve. 🔗: https://lnkd.in/eiPuwqNm #PCRFKids #PediatricCancerResearch #ChildhoodCancerAwareness #CancerResearch #ResearchGrants #CorporatePartnerships

July was dedicated to raising awareness about sarcoma and bone cancer while promoting self-care. As part of Sarcoma and Bone Cancer Awareness Month, we highlighted these often-overlooked cancers, encouraging education and early detection. Self-Care Awareness Month continued from June, inspiring individuals to prioritize their physical and mental well-being. The month also featured key advancements in care and capacity building. We reaffirmed our commitment to improving end-of-life care at the Hospice and Palliative Care Association of Nigeria (HPCAN) National Conference. We commenced the MedServe oncology training program, which was hosted at the centre and aimed at equipping oncology care professionals from various teaching hospitals across the country with advanced cancer care skills. #2024 #YearInReview #NLCC #Medserve #CancerAwareness

🎗️Why do we need to keep #childhoodcancer in the spotlight? Today, at the CCI Europe and SIOP Europe, the European Society for Paediatric Oncology (SIOPE) annual #GoldSeptember policy event, we answered why: 💊Because we need to ensure equal access to medicines 🔬Because we need to improve access to clinical trials 🧫Because we need to accelerate research and innovation opportunities 🏥Because we need to provide children with cancer the care they deserve across Europe 🌱Because we need to enhance the quality of life for patients and survivors 🔎Learn more about the manifesto at: https://lnkd.in/eVdVmgzE #whatsyourchallenge #CCIEurope #ChildhoodCancerAwarenessMonth #GoldSeptember2024 Childhood Cancer International International Society of Paediatric Oncology - SIOP European Cancer Organisation

S E P T E M B E R is... Children's Cancer Awareness Month 🎗 A good time to remember this striking fact about the disease: All pediatric cancers are rare, but some are very rare and receive very little scientific attention 👨🔬, even though some have a very poor cure rate (below 50%). This means that access to clinical trials remains an exception for children with cancer. Only 1️⃣ in 🔟 who run out of therapeutic options is admitted to an early-phase clinical trial 👩⚕️👨⚕️. You can help us invest in research on new promising drugs and ensure testing in clinical trials by registering to our charity race on the 29th of September 🏃♀️🏃♂️🏃 Visit 👉 runtokick.be 👈👩💻📱 #KickCancer #kidscancer #ChildrensCancer#PediatricCancer #ChildCancerAwareness #CancerResearch #PediatricOncology #Oncology #RUNTOKICK #ChilhoodCancer #BrainTumourResearch #BrainTumourAwareness #RunningBE #Brussels
