🌍 Exciting news from COP 29 🎉 on the successful adoption of Article 6.4 of the Paris Agreement! Under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the Kyoto Protocol, an estimate of over 2.2 billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions have been reduced. If financial institutions will accept SDM emission reductions this time as collateral for financing the projects, SDM can be even more successful. On day 1 of the Conference of the Parties (COP29), the global climate body approved the operational guidelines for Article 6.4 of the Paris Agreement, a crucial step in establishing a centralised carbon market framework that enables countries to trade emission reduction credits under the supervision of a designated Supervisory Body. The guidelines are expected to enhance transparency and integrity in carbon markets, allowing countries to meet their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) more effectively. South Africa plans to launch its Article 6.4 transactional registry by the end of this month, facilitating the operationalization of the Paris Agreement credit mechanism (PACM). This registry is vital for enabling structured trading of Article 6.4 Emission Reductions Units (A6.4ERs), which aims to bolster global climate ambition and restore trust in carbon credit markets.

After disappointment in Sharm and Dubai, this is now a very (very!) encouraging milestone to finish day one, as the rules for Article 6.4 are (finally) approved! This paves the way for full operationalisation of market-based mechanisms / joined-up international (compliance) markets. #baku #cop29
