Faculty PSA: Add a “wild card” day to your syllabus. As you’re planning your syllabus for this semester, leave at least one open day with no planned readings or activities. You can use it later in the semester to adjust for a sick day, or to cover material that took more time than anticipated, or to discuss any unexpected topic or interest that may come up. When you build the flexibility of a wild-card day into the schedule from the beginning, you can feel more confident in taking a sick day when you need one and worry less about getting off-schedule. And if you don’t need it for logistical reasons, a wild-card day can be a fun opportunity to discuss a timely topic, take a mini-field trip to the campus art museum (or similar), or incorporate student requests.
