I was blank on my first day of work as a Junior Site Engineer It was my first job on field. Until the day of joining, I had just heard of site engineers and the authority they have on site. As a fresh graduate, being addressed as sir by people felt awkward, but exciting. LoL There are many misconceptions about the job role of site engineers, and the authority it gives. But things became real for me very soon. That day I felt neglected and powerless to an extent. Nobody would do what I asked them to do, until my Senior would repeat the instructions to them. Are you an ENGINEER on site? People (specially our workers) don't care. When you enter the field as a civil engineer, people don't start listening to you just because you are there to supervise them. Rarely can you go bossing everyone around in our field. I understood one valuable thing that day. 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵. My designation doesn't matter, as long as I am able to connect with the people I work with. Being in a supervisory position need not mean throwing around it's weight. I started listening to our workers. I started learning from them. I started talking to them. I addressed each of them with respect, as one always must. And this broke the ice between us. As we bonded, things started getting easier. Our workers are our best friends on site. They understood me better, and slowly started respecting me for how I was with them, outside of my designation. If there's one thing to take away from this post, It's this: 𝗔𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆. Care for the people who work with you, and for you. Get to know them personally. Respect them. Because it's with people that everything is built. 𝙒𝙖𝙡𝙠 𝙝𝙖𝙡𝙛𝙬𝙖𝙮, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮'𝙡𝙡 𝙢𝙚𝙚𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚. 𝙏𝙧𝙮 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙨𝙚𝙚 𝙝𝙤𝙬 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨 𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙣 𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙮𝙤𝙪. Irrespective of your field, How did you tackle your first day at work?

Becoming a proficient construction is not reliant on earning a bachelor's degree in construction management, civil engineering, or a related field. Though advanced qualifications, such as a Master's in Construction Management or PMP certification, can provide a competitive edge. Practical experience, gained through internships or apprenticeships, offers valuable insights into industry practices. Strong knowledge of construction techniques, legal regulations, and project management software is crucial. This educational and experiential foundation equips individuals to confidently lead construction projects while ensuring adherence to quality, safety, and budgetary parameters. The career path of a construction manager generally begins with entry-level positions like assistant project coordinator or field supervisor. With experience, they advance to roles with greater responsibility, such as project manager or senior site supervisor. Aiming for specialised roles like green building manager or construction consultant can provide unique growth opportunities. Those with extensive experience might progress to executive positions, such as director of construction operations. Continuous learning, skill enhancement, and adaptability are vital for a successful trajectory in this dynamic and evolving field.

WOLI’S TWO WAYS TO BECOME A SUPERB SITE ENGINEER OR SUPERVISOR I believe there are two main ways to become a superb site engineer or supervisor. By superb, I mean someone who can independently manage a construction site using their own knowledge and experience—without supervision. In essence, I’m saying that there are two pathways for someone with theoretical knowledge to gain practical experience and confidently stand on their own. 1. Starting as a Mentee or Junior Staff to Gain Experience This method involves starting your career as a mentee or junior staff to gain experience gradually. You can wait until you complete your degree, then look for a job where you start from the basics and work your way up. Over the years, you gather experience as you move up the ladder. If you're lucky, you might meet good boss who are willing to show you the ropes and provide valuable materials to help you learn. In the right environment, you won’t have to struggle for opportunities—your boss or colleagues may make the process easier for you. This approach has worked well for many, myself included. It’s the traditional way of starting from the basics and gradually building up. However, there are significant challenges: Limited Opportunities: The number of available roles for internships or entry-level positions in construction companies is quite small compared to the demand. Time-Consuming: It takes a lot of time to gather the experience needed to stand on your own. For example, I know someone who has been working in concrete QA and QC supervision for seven years but has only improved in that one area of construction. Unfortunately, many young people still think this is the only way to succeed. You often hear things like, "I don’t have connections to get into a big construction company, so I can’t practice." But let me tell you: In this era of technology, online platforms, and digital tools, starting from scratch in a single company is not the only way to become a superb site engineer or supervisor. 2. Going All Out to Make Yourself This is a more modern and dynamic approach. It involves taking charge of your growth right from your school days. Many people call those who follow this path the "Jama Jama" set, but it’s a highly effective method. to be continued.. check the comment box. Talking about SIA 'poaching' MAB (MAS) engineers reminds me of a story from back in my day (over 10 years ago), when many contractors would 'poach' Engineers from Sunway Construction (Suncon) because they were highly skilled (hands-on) with site work. No need to give instructions, they just knew how to get the job done. But you need to look for those who have completed a full project cycle or have more than 3 years of experience. If they meet these criteria, it means they've been thoroughly 'grilled' by their bosses. Their attitude towards work is usually top-notch. I once gave this tip to HR at a construction company. I told them, if they ask for a slightly higher salary than your existing staff, just give it to them (if you can afford it), because you're bringing in some of the best talent in the market.
