I spoke with a candidate yesterday who shared his CV with me and the only career detail he included was from the last 5 years, despite having over 16 years in the industry.... He mentioned that another recruiter advised him to keep his CV as short as possible, focusing only on the most recent experience, which is misleading. This candidate is a Mechanical Project Manager who spent years working on the tools, earned his trade certifications, progressed to project management, and even went back to earn a degree in Construction Management. His entire career journey is relevant, not just the last 5 years. The struggle to showcase our experience and career background in a CV is something a lot of us deal with. It's often a mix of psychological hang-ups and the challenge of squeezing a full career into just a few lines. So I have created a new weekly feature: 𝐖𝐑𝐈𝐓𝐄 𝐈𝐓 𝐖𝐄𝐃𝐍𝐄𝐒𝐃𝐀𝐘! 📝 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐖𝐞𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲, I’ll be helping two of our followers craft their CVs. Together, we’ll navigate those obstacles and use the right strategies to create a CV that doesn’t just list your jobs but really highlights your potential. Think of your CV as more than just a career summary—it's the story of your professional journey and the unique value you bring to the table. You want your “book” to stand out on the shelf! 📖 This offer is for everyone—whether you’re in work, a parent looking to return after raising kids, someone who’s taken a career break and needs a fresh start, or maybe you’ve got plenty to say but struggle to get it down on paper. It could even be for your son or daughter who’s just left school and is looking for their first job. 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐖𝐞𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲, simply comment or drop me a DM if you want to remain anonymous, and by the weekend, you’ll have a brand-new CV in your inbox, ready to impress potential employers. Please feel free to share with anyone who you think this might help. If they are not on Linkedin all they need to do is drop me an email with the Subject: 𝐖𝐑𝐈𝐓𝐄 𝐈𝐓 𝐖𝐄𝐃𝐍𝐄𝐒𝐃𝐀𝐘!

I often wonder why employers use recruiters that do not understand the industry. Possibly because the person taking the brief may be knowledgeable and then they pass the opportunity to someone else to handle. I have had a few occasions where I have been rejected for roles because the recruiter has not understood or connected the relevance of my experience to the role in question. I missed out because of this and on one occasion I rang the recruiter and was later offered the job. Only last week I was rejected because they wanted someone who had worked in construction. Clearly they had not spotted the decades of construction experience, but after giving detailed information I was interviewed but rejected the role because of the package. You don't want to be insulting by stating the obvious but I do think there are occasions when a comment box would be useful so you can outline your relevance for a role. I have tried phoning but recruiters usually are never available and most will not return a call. You can get a much better picture of the suitability of a candidate if you allow them to talk to you as you can never put everything on a CV.

So this last week I had an interaction here, very similar to others I have had. Seems that this has turned into more of a social network than a professional one, but that may just be my perception. I hope so. All that said, does it make your life easier, as a talent-acquisition type, to just send out solicitations for job applications to anyone on here that has a certain keyword in their profile, or??? Do you save massive amounts of time by not reading resumes, or doing any other research into those you are soliciting for your job requirements? Just can't see that it does. IF you need to hire, say, a machinist, doesn't it make sense to look at people's experience and skillset before asking them for a resume? Would you spend any time or effort contacting a college-professor about a job for a construction worker? C'mon kids, it ain't that hard! Once you have sent out those requests for employees, do you bother to answer your e-mail? No? Too many answers from those thousands of requests you sent out? All good, don't bother answering them, why should you? And not to worry, I won't pass your name around to hardly anyone I know in the industry.
