As a key part of the SCAN project, Energie Beheer Nederland (EBN) is researching several onshore wells to identify whether they are suitable for the extraction of geothermal energy. If successful, it has the potential to be a reliable and constant source of low-carbon and renewable heat, to heat homes and buildings in the Netherlands. Last week, our CTO Axel-Pierre Bois attended the ARPA-E Geothermal Workshop on Enabling Transformative Technologies for Superhot Geothermal. Axel participated in a panel discussion on the critical technology advancements needed to unlock superhot geothermal, including advanced or alternative cement systems, high-temperature downhole tools, and improved drilling technologies. We’re honored to have had Axel represent XGS on the panel alongside industry peers from the University of Oklahoma, UltraDeep Energy Company, and HOTROCK ENERGY RESEARCH ORGANIZATION. 🌿 Geothermal project in Pantin Les Lilas : Directional Drilling Mission 🌿 Geothermal energy allows heating by utilizing the energy from the Dogger layer, located between 1,500 and 2,000 meters deep. With temperatures ranging from 60 to 80°C, this energy is sustainably exploited, as the water used is then reinjected into the aquifer. Here are some key figures from our recent project : • 4 drilling wells, including 2 for production and 2 for injection • Total meters drilled : 9,015 meters • Total flow rate: 640 m3/h Thanks to this project, 20,000 households now benefit from more ecological and economical heating, contributing to our region's energy transition. 🌍💧 #GeothermalEnergy #RenewableEnergy #EnergyTransition #MustangServices #DirectionalDrilling

Mazama Energy has announced the start of work on a demonstration plant with the goal of harnessing the power of "Super-Hot Rock" geothermal energy at the Newberry site in Oregon. The project aims to unlock new potentials in renewable energy by creating a commercially viable geothermal project in rocks exceeding 375°C. 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀: Mazama Energy is collaborating with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Oregon State University, and several national research institutions. 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀: Mazma will have to overcome multiple challenges to make this project successful. Accessing super-hot rock is expensive due to the high cost of drilling, extreme temperatures and corrisive nature of deep formation water. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝟯𝟳𝟱𝗖? 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁: At 374C and pressures above 22 MPa water is in its supercritical state. Supercritical water has a much higher heat content compared to regular water or steam allowing it to generate significantly more energy per unit mass. The potential energy output would be 5-10x that of traditional geothermal systems. 𝗘𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝘄: The properties of supercritical water allow it to circulate more efficiently through rock fractures. Its lower density and higher buoyancy relative to viscous forces increase mass transport rates, facilitating the movement of larger volumes of heat energy. 𝗜 𝗳𝗶𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗯𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝘀 𝗱𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘂𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀. Work to prepare a geothermal development plan for Ecuador is due to begin in the coming months. Although the renewable energy is not yet part of the country’s power generation park, authorities envision the start-up of the first such plant, Chachimbiro (50MW), in 2028. To advance on this front, the energy and mines ministry is seeking a consultant to establish a geothermal workgroup which will address regulatory, technical, economic-financial, socio-environmental and direct use issues. Geothermal has gotten precious little attention and capital relative to its potential, but things are finally hotting up in the sector - Fervo Energy, Eavor Technologies Inc., Quaise Energy, GA Drilling. The DoE recently put out an important Pathway to Commercial Liftoff report for Next Generation Geothermal, which is >100x resource vs conventional.
